Hello everybody!! I'm sorry for my late update due to my PC's breakdown. But my PC was delivered yesterday and I can update anytime, so I want to catch up with my delay.
On July 4th, Independence Day, I went to Las Vegas with some friends to see the fireworks and celebrate the Day and play gambling. I think many Americans are looking forward to seeing fireworks because here, in U.S.A., almost all the states prohibit playing fireworks privately, which is different from Japan. (We, Japanese can play fireworks anytime anywhere we want.)
When I was in New York on July 4th 2000, there was a great celebration with fireworks, which was one of the most impressive memories in my mind. They blocked some freeways around Manhattan and they let people walk on the freeways to see the fireworks. This was so astonishing that I was really surprised. There were some ships in the middle of the river and the fireworks were launched from there, and I could see the 180 degree view of fireworks!!
According to above experience, I was really looking forward to seeing fireworks in Las Vegas on Independence Day. But actually it was so-so. Not bad, not good. It was quite far from what I imagined. I imagined the storm of fireworks as all the hotels launched it. However it was just like Japanese fireworks festival, I mean, it was launched from one point, and it was also short about time. Because of my big expectation, I disappointed a little.
Instead of that, I could enjoy the free-show performed in downtown; Freemont St.There is an arcade which can show electric image along the ceiling. Special edition was shown on the arcade. We could see some buildings which represented U.S.A. like Statue of Liberty, White House, the Capitol, and Golden Gate Bridge with National Flag and National bird, White Head Eagle. I felt Ameican is good at livening people up. In contrast, Japan is really poor.
There were never happened to celebrate National Foundation Day by all nations and won't be in the future. In this respect (I mean, when all nations do something together), I like U.S.A. because they can do it whenever they need compared to Japan where is nothing except World Cup 2002.
I heard Las Vegas doesn't celebrate Independence Day so much, because there are so many celebrations all over the U.S.A. and not so many visitors doesn't come to Las Vegas, so even if they celebrate this special day, they can't earn money. When I heard this story I thought "This is the city of money, Las Vegas!!".
As a final hope, I found two information. One is about New Year's Day. There will be fireworks again.
Another one is Celebration of 100 years of Las Vegas on May 15 2005.
If possible I want to stay in Las Vegas in these special days!!

皆さん、お久しぶりです。パソコンの故障により長い間更新できずに申し訳ありませんでした。が、昨日修理の完了したPCが届きましたので、今までの遅れを取り戻すように頑張って書いていきたいと思います。
7月4日、アメリカ独立記念日に友人達とラスベガスに行ってきました。目的は花火、独立記念日のお祝い、そしてギャンブルでした。多くのアメリカ人が花火を楽しみにしていると思います。というのも、日本とは違い(日本ではいつでもどこでも好きなようにできますが・・・)、ここアメリカでは多くの州で政府が個人的な花火を禁止しているからです。
2000年7月4日ニューヨークで花火による盛大なお祝いがありました。それは私の中でもっとも印象的な思い出の一つになっています。マンハッタン周辺の高速道路を封鎖して、その上に人がのり、花火を見たのです。これは本当に衝撃的でした。川の中央に何隻かの船が浮かび、そこから花火を打ち上げるため、視界180度すべて花火という素晴らしい光景を見ることができました。
上記の経験からラスベガスで独立記念日に見る花火ということでとても楽しみにしていました。しかし、実際は悪くも良くもなく、まぁまぁでした。自分が想像していたものとかけ離れていたのです。自分の中では、すべてのホテルが花火を打ち上げるくらいに花火の嵐のようなものを想像していたのですが、実際は日本の花火大会と同じく一箇所から打ち上げるもので、しかも時間もかなり短かったです。期待が大きすぎるあまりに少し失望してしまいました。
その代わりというわけではないですが、ダウンタウンで行われているアーケードのショーは独立記念日バージョンの特別映像が流されており、自由の女神、ホワイト・ハウス、国会議事堂、ゴールデン・ゲート・ブリッジなどといったアメリカを代表する建造物とともに国旗や国鳥である白頭鷲を使った映像が流され、国民の気分を盛り上げるのが上手いなと感じずにはいられませんでした。それに比べて我が国日本は下手すぎる。
日本の建国記念日を国を挙げて祝うなどということは今までにもなかったし、これからもまずないでしょう。こういう国が一丸となって何かをするという点においては、2002年のW杯の時を除いてはまったく見られない日本と、必要であれば随時、一丸となれるアメリカ。個人的にはそういう点では断然アメリカが好きです。
後で聞いた話ですが、ラスベガスは独立記念日をそれほど盛大に祝わないそうです。というのはアメリカ中のいたるところでたくさんの記念イベントが行われていて、それほどたくさんの観光客が訪れるわけではなく、仮にお祝いをしてもお金が入ってこないから・・・。この話を聞いたときに「これぞ、金の町ラスベガス！！」と思いました。
最後の望みとして２つ情報を手に入れました。一つは元旦です。元旦にも花火があるそうです。そしてもうひとつは2005年5月15日がラスベガスの100周年の記念日だということ。できれば、これらの特別記念日にラスベガスにいたいものです！！
