	2005年9月13日	俺ってアイルランド人？

The other day, I was asked if I am Irish or not. Ofcourse I'm not Irish but Japanese. Looking back, last year, I was asked same question some times by natives.

Thinking about this, there is surely "O'hara" in Irish. The most well known name is "Scarlet O'hara" from "Gone with the Wind." She was a daughter of an immigrant from Ireland, and there are still some people whose family name is "O'hara" in USA.
However, they don't know that "Ohara" is famous famly name in Japan. There are some celebrities whose name are "Ohara" such as Reiko Ohara, an actress. Certainly, there is no relationship between Irish "O'hara" and Japanese "Ohara."

By the way, I was told I looked like German once before in Japan. I don't know why he told me like that. Don't I look like Japanese or Asian?

先日、ある人にアイルランド人か？と尋ねられました。もちろん、自分はアイルランド人ではなく、日本人です。しかし、振り返ってみると昨年も同じ質問を何度か現地の人に尋ねられました。

考えてみれば、アイルランド人の名前に、確かに「オーハラ」という名前があります。もっとも有名なのが、「風とともに去りぬ」のスカーレット・オーハラでしょう。彼女はアイルランドからの移民の娘で、今でもまだ「オーハラ」という姓の人はアメリカにいますからね。
しかしながら、アメリカ人は「大原」というのが日本でも有名な姓だということを知りません。「大原」という名の芸能人も何人かいますからね、たとえば「大原麗子」とか・・・。無論、アイルランドの「オーハラ」と日本の「大原」にはまったくもって関連はないでしょうが・・・。

ところで、昔、日本にいた時にドイツ人に見えるといわれたことがありました。なぜそう言われたのかはわかりませんが、自分って日本人、あるいはアジア人には見えないのでしょうか？
