Yesterday, Japan reached the top of the world.
They became the first champion of the World Baseball Classic(WBC).

WBC is the same status of the World Cup in soccer world. Olympic is the event to decide the no.1 of the amateurs in the world, and WBC began to decide the no.1 of the professionals.
However, the only MLB players who went to the final was only two Japanese Ichiro and Otsuka. Also Matsui should be in this team but he couldn't do that because of his team situation.
Isn't this strange? The top level professionals don't participate in WBC, which is the event to decide no.1 of the professionals.

There seems to be various reasons. In World Cup Soccer case, during the period of World Cup, the event is held on the off season of each countries', otherwise, countries on season suspend the league games so that national team player can fous on World Cup. Like this, World Cup is the precious event in soccer world.
I hope that WBC will be same status in the future.

昨日、ついに日本が"世界一"の座に就きました。
初代ワールド・ベースボール・クラシック(WBC)の王者になったのです。

WBCはサッカーのW杯にあたる大会で、アマチュアの世界一を決めるのがオリンピック、そして今まで野球界には存在しなかったプロの世界一を決める大会という位置づけでこの大会は始まりました。
が、ふたを開けてみると決勝戦に残ったメジャー選手は日本のイチローと大塚の2選手のみ。本来ならここにヤンキースの松井なども入っていたはずですが、チーム事情で出場できないという事態になりました。
これっておかしくないですか？プロの世界一を決める大会なのに、世界トップレベルのプロが出場しないなんて・・・。

いろいろと理由はあるみたいですが、サッカーのW杯の場合、W杯開催期間中は出場各国のリーグ戦はオフ･シーズン、あるいはオン・シーズンであっても、W杯にあわせて中断したりして、各国の代表選手が大会に集中できるようにするくらい、W杯というのは位置づけが高い存在です。
今後WBCの位置づけもそういう風になっていくことを願います。
