ハロウィンの起源 |
Halloween is not so famous in Japan, and I wonder why it's not. So I checked the origin of Halloween.
Halloween, October 31st, is originally the New Year's Eve for the Celts, and they enshrined the spirits of dead and celebrated thier harvest.
This day combined with "All Hallows'(Saints') Day", they hollowed turnip to make it look like face and lit candles in it.
These two customs fusioned into current Halloween. In short, it was the result of two different religious factors combination. Therefore, it wasn't popularized in Japan that has little religious thinking.

日本ではほとんど定着していないハロウィン。なぜ？かと思ってハロウィンの起源を調べてみた。
ハロウィン(10月31日)はもともとケルト民族の大晦日で、この日はかがり火をたいて死者の霊をまつり収穫を祝っていた。
この日はのちにキリスト教の万聖節(11月1日)「All Hallows'(Saints') Day」と重なり(「ハロウィン」はその前夜祭「All Hallows' eve」がなまったもの)、収穫されたカブなどを顔の形にくりぬいて、かがり火の変形であるロウソクを灯していた。
この2つの習慣が重なり合って、現代のハロウィンが出来上がったらしい。要するに2つの宗教的な要素が合わさってできたものであり、宗教観の薄い日本では定着しなかったのではないか？と思われる。
