アメリカ横断ウルトラクイズ |
The other day, I found old TV program on Internet. It was on-aired once a year and it welcomed general audience to join. It was exactly the biggest quiz program "in history" and it went to not only USA but also Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, even UK and France.
It was named as "Trans America Ultra Quiz".
It was broadcasted every fall on Thursday for 4 or 5 weeks on Nippon TV every year. Its catch-phrase was "Intelligence, Strength and Luch". From the first preliminary at Tokyo Dome to the final at New York, they traveled various cities answering various quizes and creating various human drama, which impressed me a lot in my childhood. Regarding cities called check point, there were variety of cities from big cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco to backland of Alaska, center of great dessert, Monument Valley.
This quiz programm might be a element that made me stay in USA and it is absolutely one of the biggest reason that made me love foreign travel.
It is quite different from the era that TV programm is the only way to go to foreign countries for regular people, now foreign travel acuqired citizenship because of appreciation of the yen and it might be quite different to bring it back, this legendary programm. However, I hope this quiz programm will be held once every 4 years similar to Olympic or World Cup.

先日、昔懐かしのTV番組をネットで見つけてしまった。年に一度の視聴者参加型のお祭り番組。数多いクイズ番組の中でもその名の通り"史上最大"規模で、アメリカだけでなく、メキシコ、南米はブラジル、アルゼンチン、果てはイギリスやフランスまで、文字通り世界をまたに駆けたクイズ番組である。
その名も"史上最大アメリカ横断ウルトラクイズ"である。
毎年1度秋頃に日本テレビで、毎週木曜に4週、あるいは5週に分けて放送されたクイズ番組で、「知力、体力、時の運」を合言葉に、東京ドームの1次予選に始まり、決勝戦のニューヨークまで、アメリカの都市を横断しながら(たまに上述したようにアメリカ国外に行くこともあった)、数々のクイズをこなしていくだけでなく、数々の人間ドラマを展開し、小学生ながらにアメリカという国の凄さを感じさせられた番組である。クイズが行われるチェックポイントと呼ばれる都市もロサンゼルスやサンフランシスコといった都会からアラスカの奥地や荒野の中央にあるモニュメントバレーまでバラエティに富んでいる。
もしかすると今、自分がアメリカにいることになった一つの要因であるかもしれないし、海外旅行を好きになったのはこの番組の影響がかなり大きいのは間違いない。
今回見て思ったのが、自分がアメリカ国内を旅行する基準に、このアメリカ横断ウルトラクイズで訪れた都市というのが無意識のうちに入っていたのではないか？ということ。行ったこもないのに、ガイドブックを見て、どこか懐かしい感じがするのはこの番組の影響だろうか？
番組を通じてしか海外に行けなかった当時とは異なり、円高の進行により海外旅行が市民権を得てしまった今、番組の復活は難しいのかもしれないが、1年に1度は言わないが、オリンピックやW杯と同じように4年に1度でも良いから復活してもらえないものだろうか？
