The other day, I had a chance to experience the first 3D BluRay in history, which is not on sale, in the screening room at the world largest post production company.
The footage I watched with specific glasses was completely different from what I've seen at theme parks or movie theaters. 3D images ever are in 3D for both main character and backgrounds or only main character. However this first time 3D BluRay is 2D for main character and 3D for backgrounds. Therefore, depth was far more deeper than ever and I could enjoy new images I've never seen before.
The interesting point was subtitles in 3D. It is much technical things but it can be 2 points below in easy words.
-Where the subtitles should be displayed in depth wise?
=>They showed some patterns with different depth and they need to change its depth scene by scene. It takes a long time to find the best depth for each scene and it seems the most trouble part for them.
-Different characters such as alphabet, Chinese Character, Korean fonts require different depth.
=>They showed us both alphabet and korean fonts at the same scene with same depth, and actually korean fonts were difficult to read with same depth.
It was surprising for me to hear technicians trouble stories I've never thought.
I think it is the huge turning point for movie industry currently and today I could experience it.

先日、仕事で発売前の史上初の3Dブルーレイというものを世界一のポストプロダクション(映画の編集などをする)の会社の試写室で見させてもらう機会があった。
専用のメガネをかけて見た映像は、今まで遊園地や映画館で見てきた3Dと大きく異なっていた。今までの3Dはメインのキャラクター、あるいは画面全体が3Dだったのが、史上初の3Dブルーレイとなった作品はメインのキャラクターは2Dで、背景のみが3Dという構成のため、奥行き感が桁違いで、今まで見たことのない新鮮な映像を楽しませてもらった。
でもって面白かったのが、3Dにおける字幕の問題。テクニカルな話なのだが、簡単にいえば以下2点。
-3Dが生み出す奥行きのどこの深度に表示するか？
⇒これは実際に深度による違いを見せてもらって、場面によって深度を変えなければならず、その適切な深度を見つけるのに膨大な時間がかかると技術者が冗談まじりに嘆いていた
-アルファベット、漢字、ハングルなど字体によって深度を変えないと読みにくい字体がある
⇒同じ場面で同じ深度でアルファベットとハングルの字幕を見せてもらったが、確かにアルファベットと同じ深度だとハングルは読みにくい
今まで考えたこともなかったことだったけど、技術者の苦労話を聞いて、なるほど！と感心させられた。
今は映画業界にとって大きな転換点ですが、それを痛感できた1日だった。
