頑張ろう、日本！ |
On March 11, 2011, all over Japan experienced big shake in both physical and psychological ways.
Earthquake with magnitude 9, the biggest one in Japanese history, happened and all the people felt its shake from the north to the south. Afterwards, all the shores had Tsunami alarm and warnings nationwide. Then after-shock and the numbers of victimes brought psychological panic. Moreover, atomic power plant problems occured.
Besides, the effects of this disaster went through worldwide. There was a victim of tsunami in California and some hundreds of million dollars damage were reported at some harbors. Then Japanese precision instruments exports were suspended and the release of iPad 2 was postponed. There were a lot of impacts all over the world.
Also the nuclear accdient made a lot of effects to the world. Compared with thermal power plant generating a lot of carbon dioxides, nuclear power plant was recommended from the point of global warming. However, because of this accident, Germany decided to stop old 7 plants and the world needs to re-think about nuclear power.
Even 2 weeks have passed since the earthquake, we start the conversation with "Are your family and friends in Japan ok?" and they showed a lot of interests in some things below;
-The level of Japanese construction standard with less collapse due to earthquake
-The calm of people who can make a long line in such emergency
Personally I think this is the result of annual practice against disaster at schools and offices. We, Japanese know we should stay under the desk when earthquake happens and we need to escape to higher place. We learned these things over and over again from our early childhood.
One more element is Japanese high-tech. For example, Shinkansen express train reduced its speed at the same time with earthquake instrument responded and there was no train accident and cellphone received the emergency message and people can prepare for tsunami in advance.
Probably no other countries had prepared with high-tech for such disaster which might happen once a decade.
However, there are a lot of anxieties when we think about the future.
The recovery of divastated area should be the first and scheduled blackout in the metropolitan area will generate the bad effects to Japanese economic situation and as a result consumption will also decrease. This schedule blackout will last at least by summer and worse more than a year. Where on earth Japan will go?
Under such tragedy, there were some good news. As a result of people trying to save on electricity following government statement, they could avoid scheduled balckout. Foreigners told the kindness of Japanese saved them. I'm proud of being Japanese hearing these news.

2011年3月11日、日本全土が揺れた。物理的にも心理的にも・・・。
マグニチュード9の観測史上最大の地震が発生し、北海道から遠くは九州まで揺れが感じられた。その後、太平洋側の海岸は北から南まですべて津波注意報/警報で覆われた。そしてその後、幾度となく襲ってくる余震や被災者の数が報道されるにつれて、日本全土が心理的パニックに襲われる。そして追い討ちをかけるように原発問題が発生。
更にその影響は日本だけにとどまらず、世界各地に及んでいる。アメリカでもカリフォルニアで津波にさらわれた人間が出たり、港に数百億円規模の被害が出たり、そして日本製の精密機器の輸出が滞り、iPad2の発売が延期されたり、本当に多くの影響がもたらされた。
さらに原発問題は世界のエネルギー問題にも大きな波紋を投げかけた。多量の二酸化炭素を発生する火力発電と比べて、温暖化防止の観点から推奨されつつあった原発の開発が再度見直されるようになり、ドイツでは旧式の原発7基が停止される事態にまでなっている。
発生から2週間以上経った今でも、ロサンゼルスでの仕事上の会話は「日本の家族や友人は大丈夫か？」で始まる。そして日本でも報道されているように、これだけの規模の天災が発生したにも関わらず、地震による建物の倒壊の少なさに見る日本の建築技術の高さ、そしてその後の日本人の冷静さについては皆非常に高い関心を示している。中でも、なぜこういう非常事態にも関わらず行列を作って整然と並べるのか？という質問が非常に多い。
個人的には学校や職場で毎年行われる防災訓練の成果というのが大きいと思っている。地震が起きたら机の下に隠れなさい、水が押し寄せてきたら高いところに逃げなさい。小さい頃から繰り返し教えられてきたことが、こういった事態に冷静に対処できる能力を養ったのではないだろうか？
そしてもう1つ日本の技術の高さも1つの要因だろう。例えば地震発生と同時に緊急連絡の入った新幹線は速度を減速し、脱線などの事故は起きなかったし、携帯電話への緊急速報により、津波が来る前に逃げ出す準備ができた人も多かった。
おそらくこんな数年に1度起こるか起こらないような事態にここまでの高い技術力を備えた国は世界中探しても日本しかないだろう。
とはいえ、これからの長い道のりを考えるといろんな不安がある。
被災地の復興はもちろんだが、首都圏における長期の計画停電による日本経済全体への悪影響、それに伴う消費の減少。こんな状態が早くても夏まで、長ければ1年以上続くらしい。一体、日本はどうなってしまうのだろう？
それでも政府の節電の呼びかけに国民が応じた結果、計画停電の回避を実現できたり、被災した外国人から、日本人の優しさに助けられたというニュースを見ると、日本という国に生まれて良かったと思わずにはいられない。
