I went to the travel from May 27th for 4 nights 5 days with one of my best friends since 2004. We also did year-crossing long drive together before.

Our flight was from Los Angeles to Memphis via Las Vegas on Friday night on May 27th after mu work ended. But the departure from Los Angeles was delayed for an hour, the start of the travel was as like that.
Then no more troubles happened and arrived at Memphis. I could find the effects of the overflow of Mississippi River all over from the airplane before the landing.

We rented a car right after the arriving and headed Graceland where Elvis Presley lived in. We took a breakfast at the resutaurant near-by because we arrived there before the opening at 9am.

The visitor's age was a bit high. It was like a show I saw in Las Vegas. His house was so gorgeous, which has basement and 2nd floor and equiped with billiards table, pool and a bar. The climax was the amount of gold discs over the wall. I was impressed by unbelievable number of the total sales over 120 millions. There was an annex of his own cars and also there were two jet planes. Also I could find TCB (Taking Care of Business) logo with the mark of thunder here and there.

When we got out of Graceland, there was a exhibition of classic cars and Elvis look-alike did a Sunday-music-show.

Then we went to Downtown and walked around Beale Street and joined Gibson factory tour. It was like as educational trip when I was in elementary school. Shaving woods, building frameworks, coloring and equipping electric parts. It was really enjoyable tour with 40 people for 40 minutes. Tour itself was ofcourse fun but it was also fun to have the feeling of "educational trip."

We headed for Nashville but because of lack of sleep, about 3 hours, both of us got very sleepy. After 90 minutes drive, we took a nap at the parking lot of the hotel besides the freeway. Due to that nap, we could arrive at Nashville in safe after 3 and half hours driving from Memphis.
After the check-in at the hotel, we went to the State Capitol of Tennessee. It located on the top of the hill and had a great view of town of Nashville. I could enjoy the beautiful sunset and illuminations. There was another building Greek temple outlook and those brought me good expectations of Nashville. Because Memphis was like a ghost town, I loved Nashville immediately.

Nashville is well known for the Mecca of Country Music and the day I arrived was Saturday, the road was so chaotic that police came. It was as if we were in Las Vegas on New Year's EVE. Even such chaotic situation, everyone enjoyed walking and listening to music with various guitar sounds from the restaurants and bars.

It was so delicious that I ate at dinner, crab and shrimp mince tower. Eating local foods is also one of the fun of the travel.

We visited the No.1 drink maker in the world next day.

2004年の渡米以来の親友で、年末長距離ドライブ旅行も共にした友人の永久帰国前の最後の旅行(4泊5日)に行ってきました。

5月27日、金曜の夜、仕事終わりにロス→ラスベガス経由→メンフィス行きの飛行機だったのだが、ロス発が1時間遅れ、出足の悪い旅立ちとなった。
しかしその後は何のトラブルもなく、メンフィスに到着。着陸寸前に見えた窓からの景色はミシシッピ川の氾濫の傷跡をそこかしこに映していた。

到着後すぐにレンタカーを借りて、エルビス･プレスリーの邸宅グレースランドへと向かった。オープンより少し早い9時前に着いてしまったので、近くで朝食をとった。さすが南部で、店員も客も黒人ばかりだ。

グレースランドはさすがに客の年齢層が高い。ラスベガスで見たVIVA ELVISというショーと同じ感じ。邸宅はさすがに豪勢なもので、地上2階、地下1階建てで、ビリヤード場からプール、バーと何でもそろっている。圧巻は壁一面に並べられたゴールド･ディスクの数。総売上枚数1億2千万枚というありえない数字に圧倒された。そして愛車を集めた別館や自家用ジェット機2台の展示もあり、いたるところに稲妻マークのTCB(Taking Care of Business)のロゴが見受けられた。

外に出るとクラシック・カーの展示があり、エルビスのそっくりさんが日曜歌謡ショーのノリでそこに集まっていた人々をもてなしていた。

その後、ダウンタウンに向かいBeale Streetをぶらつき、ギターの製造メーカーであるGibsonの工場見学。小学校の時に行った社会見学の趣で、木を削り、型を組み、カラーリングをして、電子部品を挿入するところまでを一連の流れで見学。40人くらいのツアーで40分ほどでまわる。ツアーそのものも、もちろん楽しいのだが、個人的にはこの"社会見学"の雰囲気を味わえたことも楽しかった。

続いて3時間半のドライブでナッシュビルに向かうが、昨晩の睡眠時間が約3時間だったこともあり、激しい睡魔が襲ってきた。1時間半ほど走ったところで、高速道路の出口からすぐのホテルの駐車場で30分ほど仮眠を取った。そのおかげもあって、事故ることなく、無事ナッシュビル到着。
ホテルにチェックインして、まずテネシー州の州議事堂へと向かった。小高い丘の上にあり、州議事堂からナッシュビルの街を一望できる。ちょうど夕陽が沈むタイミングで、綺麗なサンセットを見ることもできた。また建物も綺麗にライトアップされていて、すぐ向かいにあったギリシア神殿風の建物と並んで見える様は、ナッシュビルの街に対する期待度を上げてくれる。4時間前までいたメンフィスがかなり淋しい状況だった分、一瞬でこの街を好きになった。

ナッシュビルはカントリー音楽の聖地として知られ、着いたのが土曜の夜ということもあり、道路は警察が出動するほどクレイジーな状況になっていた。まるで年末のラスベガスの歩行者天国のよう・・・。それでもレストランやバーからはギターの音色に合わせて、様々な音楽が流れてきていて、皆楽しそうに街を歩いていた。

夕食の時に食べたカニと海老のすり身タワーがこの上なく美味しかった。現地の食べ物を食べるのも旅の楽しみの1つ。

翌日は世界一の売り上げを誇る某飲料メーカーを訪れた。
