We visited Jack Daniel distillery, the no. 1 sales whiskey maker. It was 90 minutes drive from Nashville. On the way, we could enjoy the exact view of "Country music scenery" with rounded hays over the lawn.

We joined 1 hour tour at distillery. This has the same feeling of education trip as in Gibson tour yesterday. They showed series of flow to make whiskey;

Drying off corns, ryes and malts, raw materials of whiskey -> liquefying/sugaring -> fermentation -> distillation -> percelation -> bottling

There are almost no wastes during these process. The sediment of corns and ryes will be used for steak-sauce. It was rich semll of alcohol and fermentation for me but children at the tour said it was disgusting. I said you would love it after 10 years in my head.

Tennessee state banned buying a bottle of alcohol on Sunday (it is ok to drink the glass at a bar). Therefore we couldn't buy any whiskey but usually they can buy bottles of whiskey usually. I could find some bottles that I never saw before. They served lemonade instead and it was so tasty.

We returned to downtown Nashville after enjoying Jack Daniel and visited the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. They displayed historic costumes and music notes. Even though I didn't have enough knowledge but I found some names and saw the actual instruments with its history. Also I found some effects of Elvis and costume of Faith Hill, which made me so happy!!

And we had a dinner at Margaritaville on Broadway, main street. It was the line-making restaurant last night and we had to wait for 45 minutes before we could get seats but this 45 minutes was glorious time for me. There was a bar near the entrance and we waited for seating there. I ordered Margarita, which was also in the name of restaurant and I listened to the song by father and daughter.
Both of them has typical way of singing of country music and the appearance was also very country music. The father was good at singing but the daughter was genius. Her voice was like Jessica Andrews whom I bought her CD before. It was really sad that I couldn't her song from our seats.

However there was another surprize there. The drink was so delicious. Purple Parrot, Jack Daniel-base margarita with coconut rum. Starter was also great!! It became one of top-5 foods I had ever eaten in US. Its name is Crab, Shrimp & Mushroom Dip. I imagined I would dip these stuff into something before I order but it was in reverse. I dip garlic toast into cheese stew with these crab, shrimp and mushroom. It was so wonderful.
After we finished the dinner, we listened her song again and left towards next destination.

I think everybody knows Parthenon in Greece. It is a huge broken temple. However people are unfamiliar with the fact that Nashville has a full-scale replica of Parthenon. I also knew it when I researched Nashville in advance of this travel. It was night time and we could enjoy the view of illuminated Parthenon. It located in the center of the park and showed its prestige. Actual Parthenon in Greece had solemnity derive from the collapse while this Nashville had the beauty of completion.

We visited the world longest place next day.

テネシー州で音楽を・・・、ケンタッキーで洞窟を楽しむ旅、2日目。

今日は世界一の売り上げを誇るウィスキー、ジャック･ダニエルの蒸留所を訪れた。ナッシュビルから1時間半の距離だが、道中、干草を丸めたものがいくつも並ぶ、THE "カントリー音楽に出てくる田舎道"をひた走り、ラジオからもただひたすらカントリーが流れてくる。この旅の醍醐味を満喫。

蒸留所では1時間のツアーに参加。こちらも前日のGibsonの工場と同じく、社会見学の味わい満点なツアーで、ウィスキーの原料となるトウモロコシやライ麦、麦芽などを乾燥させ、液化/糖化→発酵→蒸留→ろ過→ビンに詰めるまでの一連の流れを見させてくれる。これら一連の流れの中で出される廃棄物はゼロに近いらしく、トウモロコシやライ麦などの残りカスはステーキソースに使用されるらしい。また蒸留過程で匂わせてくれたアルコール＋発酵物の匂いはとても贅沢な香りだったが、ツアーに参加していた子供は「臭いだけだ！」と嘆いていた。君もあと十数年もすればこの良さがわかる時が来るよ、と心の中で笑ってみた。

テネシー州では日曜日にボトルのお酒を買うことが法律で禁止されているらしく(バーなどでグラスで飲むのはOK)、この日はそこでお酒を買うことはできなかったが、普段はツアーの後にその場でボトルを買うことができるそうだ。中には見たことのないボトルもいくつかった。変わりにレモネードを出してくれたのだがこれがまた美味しかった。

ジャック･ダニエルを満喫した後、ナッシュビルのダウンタウンに戻り、カントリー音楽の殿堂へ。歴代のカントリー・ミュージシャンの衣装やら楽譜やらが展示されている。予備知識がなかったものの、知っている名前もチラホラあり、楽器の変遷を実物で楽しんだり、ここでもエルビスの影響を感じたり、フェイス・ヒルの衣装に感激したり、存分に楽しむことができた。

その後、メイン･ストリートとなるBroadway沿いでMargaritavilleというお店で夕食。昨夜、行列ができていたお店で座席に案内されるまでに45分も待たされたが、この待っている時間が実は至福の時間となった。店に入ってすぐのところにバーがあり、座席に案内されるまではそこでドリンクを頼んで店内で待っていられるシステム。レストランの名前にもなっているので、マルガリータを頼んで、窓際で演奏していた親子の歌に耳を傾けた。

お父さんも娘も典型的なカントリー・ミュージシャンの歌い方で、外見もテンガロン・ハットをかぶせれば、"いかにも"な親子。お父さんも上手いのだが、娘が劇ウマで、昔買ったことのあるJessica Andrewsというミュージシャンを思わせる声＋歌い方で、通された座席からは彼女の歌声が聞こえなかったのが非常に悔やまれる。

しかし通された座席、というか頼んだメニューにもまた驚かされた。まずはドリンク。Purple Parrotという名前で午前中に訪れたジャック･ダニエルというウィスキーをベースにしたマルガリータに大好きなココナツのラムが入ったもの。美味い！そしてスターター、これがアメリカで食べた中でもTOP 5に入るほどの味。その名はCrab, Shrimp & Mushroom Dip。カニと海老とマッシュルームのディップ。頼む前はこれらの具材を何かに浸して食べるものかと思っていたら、これらの具材が煮込まれたチーズにガーリック･トーストを浸して食べるという代物で、久々に食べ物で感動しました。
食事を済ませた後でもう一度、彼女の歌声を聞いてから店を後にし、次の目的へと向かった。

ギリシアのパルテノン神殿は皆さん、ご存知だろう。壊れかけた巨大な神殿だ。しかし、その原寸大のレプリカがこのナッシュビルにあることはほとんど知られていない。自分も今回の旅が決まって、ナッシュビルについて調べている際に知った。訪れたのが夜だったので、ライトアップされた神殿を見る事ができた。公園の中央にそびえ、威光を放っていた。ギリシアで見た実際のパルテノンは壊れているが故の荘厳さというのがあったが、このナッシュビルのパルテノンには完成された美しさを堪能させてもらった。

翌日は世界一の長さを誇る場所を尋ねた。
