I went to Mexico City, capital of Mexico using Thanksgiving holidays for 5 days trip. It was my first trip to Spanish world, except day trip to Tijuana from San Diego and I was a bit nervous.

The airport of Mexico City surprised me due to its smallness as like local airpot. Also there were less English sign. Most immigration officers were girls and so young as if they were students different from my experience that most of them were middle-age men.
Also its altitude were 2,000 meters high and I immediately felt the air thin!! Actually I soon came in gasps when I walked around.

I checked-in the hotel.
This time I stayed at Japanese cheap hostel, which was one of my fun. Mexico is middle America and the people staying there were quite different from the ones that I met in Europe and USA. Most of them traveled South America and they told me their experience at Machu Picchu and Salar de Uyuni where I'd like to visit someday in the future.

Then I walked for an hour to Zocalo, the center of the city. It's like a long time absence to walk a long distance since I drove for last 3 years on travel.
The whole part of city-center is registered for World Heritage and there should be strict regulation for the signboard such as McDonald (no yellow on red) and 7 ELEVEN.

Zocalo is like a Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China where people gathers for something important. It's not so huge as Tiananmen Square but still big. There was a huge national flag in the center of the Zocalo and so nice to take photo of sunset.
Again I walked for an hour back to the hostel and I found it was so dark for a metropolice even 20 million people living.

Thanksgiving＋有給を1日利用して、メキシコの首都、メキシコ・シティに4泊5日で行ってきました。人生初のスペイン語圏の旅行(アメリカのサンディエゴから歩いて国境を越えて、日帰りでティファナというメキシコの町に行ったことはあったが・・・)ということでやや不安な旅立ちだった。

メキシコシティの空港は一国の首都の国際空港だというのに日本の地方空港並みの大きさでびっくり。でもって英語の表示も少なく、初っ端から驚きの連続。入国審査は学生のような女の子ばかりが審査官。今まで旅してきた国の審査官は大半が中年男性ばかりだったので、ここでも驚き。また標高2000m超えにあるため、空港到着してすぐに空気が薄い！と感じた。実際、街歩きをしていても、直ぐに息が切れた。

とりあえず地下鉄を利用して宿泊場所にチェックイン。
今回は久々の格安宿での滞在ということもあり、それも楽しみの一つだった。ユースホステルではなく、日本人宿。さすがに中米だけあって、泊まっている人も今までのアメリカやヨーロッパとはまったく違う。多くの人が南米を旅して来た帰りだったり、これから行く人だったりで、自分がいつか行きたいマチュピチュやウユニ塩湖の話なども聞かせてもらった。

荷物を置いて、徒歩で中心部のソカロまで1時間かけて歩いた。ここ3年は車での遠距離ドライブが多かったので久々の街歩き。
街の中心部全体が世界遺産に登録されていることもあり、日本の京都のように外観を壊さないようにマクドナルドも赤に黄色ではない。セブンイレブンも同様だった。
ソカロは北京の天安門広場のような感覚で市民が何かの際に集まる場所といった感じ。天安門広場ほどではないが、広い。その広場の中央に大きな国旗が掲揚されており、夕日を浴びる旗は絵になる。
そして再び1時間かけて宿に戻ったが、2000万人も暮らしている大都市なのに、街灯が少なくて、暗い。
