Day 2. Woke up at 8 and went into 2nd sleep but a chime of bells from the church next door broke my sleeping. It reminded me the travel in Europe.

Today's destination is Teotihuacan, the World Heritage!

1 hour drive from North direction bus terminal of Mexico City, the pyramid that can be seen from a distance had made me excited but the feeling got stronger on arrival. The Temple of Feathered Serpent locating close to the gate, which I saw on movies and photos over and over, has double structure staircase pyramid in front while another temple behind. We can't see the temple without climb up the front pyramid. The carvings on the temple were very mysterious and attractive and brought me to the ancient era and stayed 30 minutes there.

Then I started to walked the Avenue of the Dead. The arrow on guidesign showed detour somehow. However I went straight following others but there were several up & down and I was exhausted when I arrived at Pyramid of the Sun.
However, I had to climb since I was here!! I took a couple of breaks on the way to the top of the pyramid, I could climb up 248 steps and finally on top!! The landscape from the top was so great that we could see the ancient city surrounded by green nature.

Teothihuacan has another pyramid, called Pyramid of the Moon. The sun and moon is really good naming. It not as large as Pyramid of the Sun but it locates at the end of the Avenue of the Dead and has the greatest view from its top.

I returned to the city and visited Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. It was a church that a miracle happened. However it leaned due to the land sinking and new shrine was built next to the old one and related buidling surrounds.

Then I visited the 2nd World Heritage, National Autonomous University of Mexico. It was 4:30pm I arrived but it was 9pm when I left since the campus is so large. US universities are also large and there are free shuttle bus withing campus but this Mexican campus has 12 lines.

2日目、8時起床。2度寝をしたが、宿の隣が教会のため、鐘の音で再び目が覚める。ヨーロッパを旅していた時の感覚がよみがえる。

今日は今回の旅の最大の目的、世界遺産テオティワカンへ！

メキシコシティの北方面バスターミナルからバスに揺られること1時間強、遠くからでも見えるピラミッドの遠景に気持ちを高ぶらせていたが、到着すると改めて、気持ちが高ぶった。敷地に入って直ぐのところにあるケツァルコアトルの神殿は何度も映像や写真で見てきた階段型ピラミッドの向こうにもう1つの祭壇が隠れているという2重構造。手前の祭壇を登らないと見ることができない。その奥の祭壇の彫刻がとても神秘的で気持ちは一気に古代へと持っていかれて、そこで30分ほど過ごした。

そして太陽のピラミッドに登ろうと死者の道と呼ばれるメインストリートを歩き始めたのだが、なぜか矢印は迂回方向を示している。それに構わずにまっすぐに進もうとするのだが、階段状の神殿跡のようなものが何度も行く手を阻み、何度も上り下りを迫られ、ピラミッドの到着したころには既にクタクタ。

それでももちろん、ここまで来たからには登らねば！！途中、何度か休憩を取りながら、248段の階段を登り切り、頂上へ。頂上からは、緑に囲まれた広大な自然の中に古代人が築いた古代都市がポツンとそびえる様子が一望できる。

テオティワカンにはもう1つピラミッドがある。それは月のピラミッド。太陽と月のピラミッドというネーミングがとても素晴らしい。太陽のピラミッドほどの大きさはないが、死者の道の端にある月のピラミッドの頂上からはテオティワカン遺跡を一望できる最高の景色を展望できる。

再び1時間をかけてシティに戻り、グアダループ寺院を訪れた。奇跡が起きたという言い伝えのある教会だったが、地盤沈下で傾いたため、隣に新しい聖堂も立てられ、あたり一体に教会関連の建物が連なっている。

そして本日、2つ目の世界遺産、メキシコ国立自治大学を訪れる。大学の最寄駅に着いたのは4時半だったが、キャンパスがとてつもなく広く、出たのは9時だった。アメリカの大学も広くキャンパス内を周遊する無料バスがあったが、このキャンパスは無料バスが12ラインもあった。
