LACCでの授業 2 |
The four below are held in the room like movie theater. The chair has a Americanly table instead of cup-holder (the table like we use in the airplane when we eat in-flight meal), on where we take notebook. The room turns into movie theater when we see movies turning off the lights.
First of all, Cinema1 teachs us the fundamental knowledge how to shoot the movie. For example, the difference between video camera (for TV) and film camera (for movie), basic structure of film, lense, and lighting (if I replace movie with English, we are learning grammer of movie). Teachers show us useful TV programs at the end of each class, which is really interesting and make me imagine the portrait I want to shoot (as a beauty of the image).
Second, Cinema2 let us shoot practically using the knowledge we learned in Cinema1. They used film camera until last semester, but it changes into to use video camera from this semester (the main reasons are that film industry itself is in the period of changing from analogue to digital, and that it is cheaper than film camera). There are mainly three projects; Project1, we took 21 shots (we were passed the order we have to obey like close-up, or zoom). Project2, we have to make a short film (2-4 minutes) under the theme of "CHASE". Project3, we'll make 5-minutes film without any restrictions (ofcourse we have to write story-board and screenplay...).
Cinema3 and Cinema4 are about history, Cinema3 is about fiction film while Cinema4 is about documentary film. Both of them starts from the period of inventory of projector at the end of 19 century, Cinema3 treats famous films and famous director with background of the ages (before World War I, French & Italian cinema dominated world market rather than Hollywood cinema but the War made Hollywood improve its status, and so on...), not only American but European and foreign cinema including Japanese). The class consists of two parts; lecture and viewing movie (last week we saw three silent comedies including Chaplin's "KID"(1921)). On the other hand, Cinema4 also consists of two parts; lecture and viewing films like Cinema3, and we study about documentary films. It was so hard to study documentary which I never see, however as I keep going through textbook, I know the life of the director and it becoming interesting for me to read textbook as my preparation for the class while movie itself is sometimes boring (I almost sleep for 20 to 30 minutes...).
I'm taking cinema classes as I mentioned above. Among these, Cinema1, Cinema3, and Cinema4 requires to prepare for & review the class, which takes long time for me to complete, therefore I can't handle other things (at first, it was so tough for me that I studied all day long even on weekends). Recently, I'm getting used to it, but I have to study for coming tests, which will start from next week.I'm spending busy life, actually I saw only one movie since I moved into Los Angeles.
Though it is hard, I really enjoy Cinema2. Besides Cinema2, we're talking about exhibition for film festival and writing screenplays.

以下の4コマは映画館のような教室で授業を受けています。ジュース受けの代わりにアメリカらしい肘掛テーブル(飛行機の機内食を食べる時ようのテーブルといえばわかっていただけるだろうか？)がついていて、そこでノートを取っています。そして映画を見るときは教室が映画館ということで、ライトが消え、まさに映画館そのものになります。
まずはCinema1。このクラスでは映画撮影に必要な基礎知識を学んでいます。例えば、ビデオ・カメラ(TV用)とフィルム・カメラ(映画用)の違いや、フィルム、レンズ、照明などの基本的構造などを学んでいます(英語に例えるなら、映画撮影の文法を学んでいるといった感じだろうか？)。毎回クラスの最後に役に立ちそうなTV番組を見せてくれて、それが毎回面白く、自分の中でこういう映像(単純に映像美としての・・・)を撮りたいなというイメージが沸いてきます。
Cinema2はCinema1で学んだことの実践ということで実際に撮影をしています。去期まではフィルム・カメラを使った撮影だったらしいが、今期からはデジタル・ビデオ・カメラを使った実習に変わりました(映画業界自体がアナログからデジタルへの過渡期であること、コストが安いことがその大きな理由)。大きく3つのプロジェクトがあり、Project1では21個のショットを撮りました(クローズ・アップだとか、ズームだとか、といった指定が21個あって、それに従って撮っただけの簡単なもの)。Project2は"チェイス"というテーマで2〜4分のショート・フィルムを撮影するというもの。そしてProject3は5分のショート・フィルムを撮るということ以外、何も制限はないらしい(当然ストーリー・ボードや台本のようなものは書かなければいけないが・・・)。
Cinema3とCinema4は歴史。Cinema3がフィクション、Cinema4がドキュメンタリーの歴史でどちらも19世紀末に映写機が発明されたところから始まり、Cinema3はその後の有名な作品と監督を時代背景とともに(第一次大戦前はハリウッドよりもむしろフランスやイタリア映画が世界を支配していたが、戦争によりハリウッドが台頭してきた、など・・・)扱い、アメリカ映画だけでなく、上述したようにヨーロッパ映画をはじめ海外作品(日本映画もやる予定)の歴史も扱っています。授業自体は講義半分、映画鑑賞半分といった感じです(ちなみに先週はチャップリンの「KID」という作品をはじめ、3本のサイレント・コメディを見ました)。一方Cinema4も講義半分、映画鑑賞半分といった感じで、ドキュメンタリー映画について学んでいます。今までまったく興味のなかったドキュメンタリー映画ということで、最初はとっつきにくかったのですが、教科書を読むにつれて、その監督の人生も学べるため、教科書を予習として読むということに関しては非常に面白くなってきましたが、映画そのものはつまらないものもあります(だいたいいつも2、30分は寝てしまう・・・)。
といった感じで映画のクラスは取り組んでいます。これらのうち、Cinema1、3、4が予習・復習をしないと授業についていけないので、予習・復習をしているのですが、これに時間がかかって、他のことができないのが現状です(最初のころは本当にきつくて、週末も朝から晩まで勉強していました)。最近、少し慣れてきたと思ったら、来週からテストが始まるので、そちらの勉強もしないといけなくて、本当に忙しい毎日です。実際、ロスに来てからまだ1本しか映画見てないですから・・・。
とはいえ、Cinema2に関しては本当に楽しく取り組んでいます。Cinema2以外でも映画祭に出展するための作品も撮りたいね、とクラスメイトと言いながら、脚本を書き溜めたりもしています。
