What I was surprised at EXPO was the number of foreign people. Even if it was the first EXPO in 21st century, I thought it is Japanese that visit EXPO. Therefore I was really astonished when I saw foreigners. There were Europeans and Americans besides Korean and Chinese. There was also 4 languages such as Japanese, English, Chinese, and Korean on the navigation board.
But about pavilions, there are only Japanese and English-subtitle explanation, which makes people, who speak other languages, unsatisfied.

What made me think it great was sound navigation in card form on the exhibition at the mammoth lab. When we make it closer to our ear, we can hear the voice receiving the sound from the infrared sound communication system. We can see and listen with different languages at same time. I thought if there were Chinese and Korean translation cards.
However, it might accomplish the meaning of the first EXPO in 21st century showing the possibility of the new style of the sound transmission system,

当日、万博会場で驚いたのが、外国人の多さ。21世紀最初の万博とはいえ、来場するのは日本人ばかりだろうと思っていたのですが、実際に会場で見た外国人の多さには驚きました。見た目からして明らかに欧米人だと思われる外国人はもちろんのこと、韓国、中国からの来場者も多かった。それに伴うかのように案内表示も日本語、英語だけでなく、韓国語、中国語と計4ヶ国語で表記されていた。
がしかし、パビリオンについては、日本語と英語字幕での説明しかなく、それ以外の言語しか話せない人にとっては、決して100%の満足を得られなかったのではないだろうか？(これはどこの国で開かれていても同じ問題が起こるといえば、起こるのだが・・・)。

その中で、おっ！と思ったのが、マンモス・ラボの展示室で渡された音声ガイド。カード型のスピーカーを耳に近づけると、屋上から吊るされた赤外線音声伝達装置からの音声を受信してそれを聞けるというシステム。同じ映像を見ながら、日本語と英語の音声を聞くことができるというアイテム。どうせなら、中国語と韓国語の案内も用意しておけば良かったのに・・・。
がしかし、今後、こういったアイテムが万博やテーマパークなどで増えていくという可能性を見出させたという意味では21世紀最初の万博としての意義は果たせたのではないだろうか？
