This week, our English class had a guest who was an ex-gangster. We discussed drug trade, rivalry, and so on. One time, our discussion wandered from the subject into the education.
One student, who was a housewife in her 40's, said that education didn't guarantee the social status and high income. Her theory was that one of her acquaintance had PhD but she worked for McDonald's while another friend, who hadn't go to university, was a president of a company.
My answer to this statement is "No". Her theory is not correct. Because it is rare case and "high education = high income" is true in USA, too. Besides, different from Japan, USA involves family line.

今週、英語の授業で元ギャングという人を招いてディスカッションをしました。その中ではドラッグのやり取りの話、抗争の話などありましたが、少し話がそれて、教育の話になりました。
ある生徒(40代の主婦)が「"教育"が社会的地位や高収入を保証するわけではない」という発言をしました。その論理は、私の知り合いで博士号を持っているけど、マクドナルドで働いている人がいるし、大学に行ってもいないけど、会社の社長をしている人がいる、といったものでした。
この発言に対する私の答えは"否"。その生徒の論理は間違っている。なぜなら、上述の例は、あくまでも少数派のきわめてまれな例であり、世間一般的に見れば、やはり高学歴＝高収入(＝今回のディスカッションで意味するところの社会的地位)というのは、ここアメリカでも成り立っている。しかも日本と違い、家系も絡んでくる。
