Beckham, English player, is one of the top player now, but he was criticized by all the citizens in England for his foul out with red-card in World Cup France 1998 vs Argentina. There was tragedy that one Colombian player who did own-goal in World Cup USA in 1994 was shot to die. Is there any other sports that has such bloody history?
There might be someone who will say it is against sportsmanship. But in opposite way of thinking, World Cup is something worth fighting with something precious. For example, it can be the dignity of nationality. It can't be done with something fine just like dream or hope.
With the dignity of nationality, bringing miserable events such as wars and murders sometimes, it is held once per 4 years; that is World Cup!

My personal history of World Cup began in World Cup Italy 1990 and it counts 5 times in this World Cup 2006. For me, it is something that can be said in one phrase;
"World Cup is Priceless!!"

イングランドのベッカムといえば、今でこそ世界のトップ・プレーヤーですが、98年フランス大会の対アルゼンチン戦でレッドカードによる途中退場の責任を負わされた彼は国をあげてのパッシングに遭いました。また94年アメリカ大会ではオウン・ゴールを入れてしまったコロンビアの選手が帰国後に射殺されるという悲劇も起きています。他のどんなスポーツにこのような血の歴史があるでしょう？
"スポーツマンシップに反するんじゃないか？"という意見をいう人がいるかもしれません。しかし逆に考えれば、何かをかけて戦うべきもの、それだけ大事なものなんです。例えばそれが国の威信だったりするわけです。夢や希望とかそういった類の奇麗事だけでは済まされないものなのです。
国の威信をかけ、時に戦争、殺人といった常軌を逸する事件すら引き起こしてしまうほどの力を持った4年に1度の祭典、それがW杯なのです。

個人的なW杯の歴史としては、90年イタリア大会から数えて、今回が5回目のW杯です。そんな自分にとってのW杯を一言で表すとするなら、一昔前の某カード会社のCMから言葉を借りていえば、
"World Cup is Priceless!!"
