Final stage best 16 DAY2. First game was between England, 1st place in Group B, vs Ecuador, 2nd place in Group A. The game was on England's pace as most people expected throughout the game but they couldn't carried the ball to the goal area and they couldn't create the goal chance because they changed formation to 4-5-1. In opposite, Exuador's counter-attack was terrible and they had more critical chances than England did in fact.
But in 2nd half, captain Beckham attracted us. 15th minutes in 2nd half, he kicked a free-kick on left-side 25 meters far from the goal and he made it!! He is the real superstar that he made it in bad mood.
After this free-kick, England's attack became better and they could carry the ball to the goal area. The game was over in 1-0 and England decided to go to best 8.

Except Beckham's free-kick, England didn't show fantastic play. However, Rooney showed some brilliant techniques in the goal area. He was on pitch for 90 minutes for the first time in this World Cup. He couldn't get a goal but he can be expectable for next game.

I don't know if he was in bad condition or not, Beckham was not good after he successed in free-kick and he sometimes seemed to gasp. And the coach substituted him on the way. The team was also in bad, wasn't it? Whatever, even if team was not good, they won. This is the big difference between strong countries and Japan.

決勝トーナメント1回戦2日目。第1試合はB組1位のイングランドとA組2位のエクアドル。試合は大方の予想通り、終始イングランドがゲームを支配するものの、フォーメーションを4-5-1に変えたためか、ゴール前までボールがつながらず、得点機はあまり訪れずに、時折エクアドルが見せるカウンターのほうが怖さを感じる攻撃だった。実際、決定機はエクアドルのほうが多かったし・・・。
しかし、後半。キャプテン、ベッカムが魅せてくれた。後半15分、左サイド約25メートルの位置で得たFKを、ベッカムが直接決めた。こういういやな雰囲気の中で決めるてこそ、やはりスーパー･スターだ。
その後は、イングランドの攻撃が少し滑らかになり、ゴール前までボールがつながるようになった。試合は1-0のまま終了し、イングランドがベスト8進出を決めた。

ベッカムのFK以外、これといった見せ場はなかったイングランドだが、ゴール前で見せるルーニーのプレーには輝きが見えた。ルーニーは今大会初めて、90分間出場し、得点こそなかったものの、今後の試合に期待が持てるプレーを見せてくれた。
試合のハイライト (イングランド vs エクアドル)
調子が悪かったのか、FKを決めた後のベッカムは輝きがなく、あえいでいるようなシーンが何度もあった。それを察知したのか、ベンチが途中交代させた。チームもそれと同じく、調子が悪かったのだろうか？とはいえ、調子が悪くても勝つ。これが強豪国と日本の大きな違いだ。
