Final stage best 16 DAY3. First game was between Italy, 1st place in Group E, vs Australia, 2nd place in Group F.
One Italian player fouled out right after the 2nd half began, then Australia took number advantage and they dominant the game. Italy reduced offense and they started traditional "Catenaccio", which means "lock the key to a gate", so Australia couldn't create a chance.
On the other hand, Italy created some critical chance by counterattack but forward couldn't get a goal. Right before the 2nd half ended, 98th minutes, Italy got penalty-kick and Totti, who came into the pitch from the middle of the game, kicked the ball into the goal.

On the verge of enf of stoppage time in 2nd half, it happened "penalty-kick". Plus, it was penalty that he wasn't laid down by defender but he falled by himself. If I were the judge, I presented yellow card to the Italian player as a "simulation" that is a play trying to trigger foul.
Aussie coach Hiddink seemed to decide the game in overtime. As a proof of thistheory, he saved 2 substitution even though he usually used full of 3 substitution in 90 minutes. But due to this misjudge, his stragtegy went off the rails...

Anyway, all the team who won the best 16 matches are all 1st place team in each group league so far. Does this tendency keep going on?

決勝トーナメント1回戦3日目。第1試合はE組1位のイタリアとF組2位のオーストラリア。
イタリアが後半開始早々に1人退場者を出したことで、数的優位に立ったオーストラリアがボールを支配するものの、攻撃の人数を減らし、"カテナチオ"と呼ばれる伝統的な守備固めに入ったイタリア相手に決定機を作れない。
一方のイタリアはこれまた得意のカウンターから何度か決定機を作るものの、FW陣が決めることができないまま、延長戦突入か？と思われた後半ロスタイム3分でイタリアがPKを獲得し、それを途中出場のトッティーが落ち着いて蹴りこみ、そのまま試合終了のホイッスル。

ロスタイムも終了寸前という時間帯でPK。しかも、DFに倒されたというより、自分から引っ掛かって倒れたような反則。もし自分が主審なら、倒れた(倒されたではなく・・・)イタリアの選手にシミュレーション(わざと倒れ、反則を誘うプレイ)でイエロー･カードを出していただろう。
オーストラリアのヒディング監督の考えでは延長戦で決着をつけるつもりだったのだろう。その証拠にいつもなら交代枠3人をうまく使うヒディングが2人の交代枠を残していた。しかし、この誤審で彼の策略は見事にくるってしまったのだった・・・。
