2nd game was between Switzerland, 1st place in group G, and Ukraine, 2nd place in group H.
In the early stage, Switzerland took initiative and overwhelmed Ukraine. Ukraine followed the opponents ball from the front line, and this pressing started to act, then Switzerland gradually became difficult to do pass around. Thus, Ukraine regained initiative with the suspicion if their stamina lasted till the end, however, they kept following and pressing for 90 minutes and they also kept initiative throughout both 1st and 2nd half.

But both team had strong defense and they couldn't score a goal, so game went on to overtime. Ukraine couldn't have stamina to keep pressing in overtime indeed and Switzerland retook initiative again. They created some goal chance but eventually overtime was also scoreless-draw.
The first PK(penalty kick) battle in this tournament began at last. Ukraine first kicker Shevchenko, who is the world-wide star player, was blocked by Swiss goal keeper. The chance of victory visited Switzerland but the rest 3 Swiss kicker missed, then Ukraine survived PK battle in 3-0.

As a result, 3rd match in qurter-final became Italy vs Ukraine. And this also became first case that 2nd place team in group league won and go to best 8.
It's pity that Switzerland must go home with no lost game and even no lost goals...

第2試合はG組1位のスイスとH組2位のウクライナ。
立ち上がりはスイスが主導権を握り、ウクライナを圧倒したが、ウクライナは前線から激しく相手ボールを追いかけるようになり、次第にプレスが効き始め、スイスはボールをまわすことさえ困難になる。こうしてウクライナが主導権を取り返したが、最後までスタミナが持つのか？という疑問がよぎったが、見事に90分間プレスをかけ続け、前後半主導権を握り続けた。

がしかし、両チームとも堅守のチームであり、中盤で膠着するだけで決定機を作ることができず無得点のため、試合は延長戦へ。さすがに延長戦はプレスをかけるだけの体力は残っておらず、再びスイスが主導権を握り、得点チャンスもあったが、結局延長戦もスコアレス・ドロー。
そして今大会初のPK戦へともつれこんだ。PK戦はウクライナの1人目、世界的スター選手、シェフチェンコのPKをゴール･キーパーが止め、スイスに勝機が・・・。しかし、スイスの選手はその後、3人連続で外し、ウクライナが3-0でPK戦を生き残った。

この結果、準々決勝第3試合はイタリアvsウクライナとなった。そしてグループ･リーグ2位のチーム初のベスト8進出ともなった・・・。
