Ryoko Tani made unprecedented seventh consecutive championship!!
To be exact, it was done in tournaments she joined. However, she defeated all medalists of the ex-tournament that she didn't participated in, and won gold medal.
As she told after the game, it is worth 2 gold medals in past 2 tournaments. It was really World Judo Championships of "Tani", by "Tani", for "Tani".
This event is held once per two years. So, 7th consecutive championship means she never lose for 14 years. Shw only lost 4 times for these 14 years even if it oincludes Olympics and All Japan Titles.
If she won a gold medal in Beijing Olympics 2008, it becomes third consecutive champion in Olympics.
Is there any other athletes in the world even in other sports?
When I thought of this, I came to one thing, Japan People's Honor Award. There is a honoree who won a gold medal just one time in Olympics even thought Tani, who made a great history as I mentioned above, didn't get it yet.
What is the meaning of this award? I think she can't receive this even this time's seventh Championship. But in case she win a gold medal in Beijing next year, I hope she will receive this award.
