As I wrote last time, this is 3 successive year-crossing trip. The first day is on Christmas and I expected a Christmas gift from Santa Clause with a tiny hope. However there were a lot of unexpected happenings and it was disappinted day for me rather than present (pleasant?).
By the way, today's route was Los Angeles => Phoenix => Tucson and total was 534miles.

I rented a car yesterday because all the branches except airport close today. So I departured at 6am before sun rises as usual. I filled gas right after the departure. It seemed everything fine at the beginning but after 30 minutes drive, I found the gas meter is getting lower so quickly. It was because of free upgrade yesterday due to my booked car was taken.
Actually I booked economy class car and after subtle upgrade it became very bad efficiency car, large sedan type. It only runs 2 hours with gas for $20, price varies between $3.39/gallon and $2.75/gallon. I spent $80 today only for gas. This is first UNEXPECTED.

Second UNEXPECTED was that almost all the stores closed because of Christmas (In Japan, most stores open on Christmas, so it was unexpected for me as Japanese). Even 24/7 stores such as CVS and McDonald's closed. Accordingly one of my fun in travel, Hard Rock cafe also closed and I couldn't get pins. I got really disappointed.

Next is time-difference. There is 1 hour lag between California and Arizona. I had same experience 2 years ago but I completely forgot this. So I have to wake up 1 hour early tomorrow. One hour in the morning should be valuable...

Then I was involved in unexpected backup which never happens in Los Angeles. It was due to a grade crossing by freight train. US freight train usually brings dozens of train cars and once it's closed, it won't open as if it lasts forever. So I had to wait for 20 minutes.

The final is the biggest one. Arrived at the hotel, I tried to find a restaurant opening on Christmas through Internet but it doesn't work. I asked at front desk but they just said they didn't know why... Therefore I drove out for a restaurant but no store opened because of Christmas. So I bought sandwich, salad and banana at a gas station. It became super poor dinner for the first night...

Tomorrow is my first time to visit Texas, I'd like to have special UNEXPECTED in different meaning from today's one!

前回も書きましたが、今年で3年連続の年越し旅行。初日はクリスマスということで、サンタクロースから気の利いたプレゼントの1つでも・・・と数ミリほどの期待をしていたいのだが、予想外の出来事だらけで、プレゼントどころか、むしろマイナス面ばかりの初日となった。
ちなみに本日のルートはLA→フェニックス→ツーソンの534マイル(854.4km)の旅程でした。

レンタカーは今日は空港以外のお店はすべて休みということで、昨日のうちにしておいたので、とりあえず、これまた恒例の日が昇る前の6時出発。そしてすぐにガソリンを補充。順調なスタートに見えたが、30分も走るとガソリンの減り方が半端ない。昨日、予約した車がないからということでグレード･アップしてもらったのが裏目に出た。
というのは、エコノミーの小さい車を予約していたのに、中途半端なグレード･アップでセダン・タイプの大型の車になったため、燃費がとてつもなく悪い。$20分のガソリン(場所によるが$3.39/ガロン〜$2.75/ガロン)で2時間しか走れない。今日1日だけで$80分もガス代に消えてしまった。これが第1の予想外。

第2の予想外はクリスマスということで、アメリカのお店はほとんど休み。24時間営業のはずのCVSという薬局やマクドナルドまで閉店状態。旅の楽しみの1つであるハード・ロック・カフェも当然のように休みでピン・ゲットできず。テンション大幅に↓。

続いて、時差。自分が住んでいるカリフォルニア州と初日の宿を取ったアリゾナ州の間には時差が1時間ある。2年前の旅でも同じ経験をしていたのにすっかり忘れていた。というわけで、明日の朝は予定より1時間早く起きなければいけない。朝の1時間は貴重だというのに・・・。

そしてロスではまず経験しない予想外の渋滞に巻き込まれた。それは貨物列車の踏み切り渋滞。しかもアメリカの貨物列車はとても長い。何十車両と連なっているため、一度閉じたら、まさに開かずの踏み切りとなる・・・。ってわけで、20分ほど踏み切りが開くのを待たされた・・・。

そして最後の予想外。これが一番大きい。ホテルに到着し、クリスマスでも空いているであろうレストランを検索しようと思ったが、ネットが使えない。フロントに電話しても原因が不明らしく、レストランを探しにドライブに出るが、クリスマスということもあり、どこも空いてない。仕方なくガソスタでサンドイッチとサラダとバナナを購入。初日の夕食は貧祖な食事となりました・・・。

明日は人生初のテキサス州ということで、今日とは違う意味での予想外を期待したい！
