Today, I departed at 6am in LA time as I did yesterday. I left Tucson right after filing gasoline and went to Tombstone. On the way, there was inspection by national border patrol on another lane.
Tucson is the famous with "Gunfiht at OK Corral". If you don't know it, it's the historical place which became the base of Western movie like Quick and Dead starring Sharon Stone, Russel Crow and Leonardo DiCaprio. It's also the place Wyatt Earp lived in.
Therefore it was the place keeps Western building as it were. However Old Tucson Studio looked much real where I visited 2 years ago.
There was a graveyard at north of town and each cemetory telling the reason of death like "Shot", "Lynched" and "Hanged by mistake"...

Then that happened on the way to El Paso from Tombstone!!
National border patrol stopped me. I didn't bring my passport because this is domestic travel. They told me I needed passport(visa) after I showed driver's license. I told I didn't bring it with me. They forced me to park at the side while they checked with the system.
Why they did it far away from the border? Anyway, I could pass it after the system matching.

After 4 hour drive from Tombstone, finally I entered Texas for the first time in my life. El Paso is just a step from Mexico crossing one river and each side of the river looks completely different. It looked strange compared with the one at Niagara, border of US and Canada. It's also different from the one at San Diego and Tijuana. San Diego/Tijuana is more pop and cheerful while El Paso seems dawn.
I could look around downtown only because I arrived late. It had similar atomosphere with Fashion District in LA Downtown area and both of these had a lot of Mexican clothes stores. There were some bridges over the river and the bridge in the west had heavy traffic from Mexico.
It was also similar atomosphere with LA Downtown, in short, very dangerous, so I went hotel right after the sunset.

I went bed with fatigue from long drive, 940 mile in 2 days.

2日目も昨日と同じくLA時間で6時出発。ガソリンを補充し、すぐにツーソンを後にし、ツームストンへ向かう。その途中、反対車線で、国境でもないのに国境警備隊が検問をしていた。
ツームストンは日本では「OK牧場の決斗」で有名な観光地。「OK牧場」を知らなくても、例えばシャロン・スローンとラッセル・クロウにディカプリオが出演した映画「クイック＆デッド」など、いわゆる西部劇映画の元になった史実の場所であり、ワイアット・アープが実際に生きていた場所。
というわけで西部時代の街並みを今に伝える場所なのだが、正直、2年前に訪れたオールド・ツーソン・スタジオの方がそれっぽい。
町の北に西部時代の人たちのお墓があり、"銃殺"だとか"リンチによる死亡"だとか"間違って絞首刑"といった当時をしのばせる死因が一つ一つの墓に書かれている。

そしてツームストンから次の目的地エルパソに向かう途中に事件は起きた！
行きに見ていた国境警備隊に引っかかった。今回はアメリカ国内の旅なのでIDは免許証のみ携帯で、パスポートは置いてきた。免許証を見せたところ、パスポート(ビザ)も必要だと言われ、持ってないと言うとシステムに照合するから待っていろと路肩に強制駐車。
国境付近ならいざ知らず、なぜそんなところで検問してんだよ！システム照合の結果、無事検問通過。

ツームストンから4時間のドライブで遂に初のテキサス州！エルパソに付くと川を1本挟んでメキシコということで、川の向こうとこちらで明らかに町並みが異なっている。昔ナイアガラで見たアメリカとカナダの国境とは異なり、異様な雰囲気だ。サンディエゴの南、ティファナとの国境ともまた違う雰囲気。サンディエゴ/ティファナのそれが陽気なのに対し、エルパソのそれは何か暗い。
到着したのが夕方だったこともあり、ダウンタウン以外は見て回れなかったが、ダウンタウンはLAのダウンタウンの側にあるファッション・ディストリクトと呼ばれる地域とほぼ同じくメキシカンのお店(主に洋服店)が立ち並ぶ。そして川沿いには橋が複数かかっており、最も西の橋はメキシコからの車が大渋滞していた。
夜はこれまたLAダウンタウンと同じく非常に治安が悪そうだったので、日没と同時にすぐにホテルへと戻りました。

そして2日で940マイル(約1500km)という長距離ドライブの疲れですぐにベッドへと倒れこんだ・・・。
