I woke up at 6am as usual and I could felt the joy of travel today finally.

First of all, I drove randomly with one purpose and I could find the way reaching to my purpose. My purpose was to enjoy the panoramic views of El Paso from the hill. I imagined it from the name of Rim Street and it was actually the road going through the rim of the hill. Driving on that street, I found a lot of luxury houses as Los Angeles does same according to the rule that rich people live on hills. Also I found observation deck on the hill and had wonderful view of El Paso and Mexico far away.
The feeling of having panoramic views of unknown cities are the one of the joys of travel and I could have follow the rule that I climb up the highest building for the first time in a long time.

Also I visited Mission Trail at suburbs of El Paso. There were three churches that Christian was passed by. All of these were white and reminded me the white house on the Aegean Sea cruise in Greece.

I left El Paso 30 minutes later than planned to Carsbad National Park. As long as I searched Internet, it was not highway and told me it would take 3 hours over 144 miles. So I thought the speed limit was 50 miles but actual one was 70 miles and I could arrive in 2 hours. On the way, there was another inspection of national border but I could pass without any problems saying I'm citizen! Whatever it is, how many illegal immigrants were there in El Paso...!!

There were 3 tours at Carlsbad. One was the one with ranger but it was sold out already and had two choices. Both of them were self-guided tour; one took about 2.5 hours and another one took about 1.5 hours. I chose shorter one. We took the elevator to 750 feet underground and walked 1.5 mile trail. I really respect those who found and entered caverns for the first time such as Akiyoshido Cavern in Japan, Jenolan Caves in Australia and Carlsbad Caverns. They entered no-lights caverns without maps.
Comparing all these three caves, the scale is for Jenolan, the joy and fan is for Carlsbad but the beauty of caverns is for Akiyoshido because there is only view called Senmai-Sara (Thousand Dishes).

And the accomodation tonight was Roswell famous with UFO.
Arrived at 6pm and most stores already closed but I could find some interesting displays all over the town. The street lamps with alien heads, display of alien welcoming in front of the hotel.

The reason I could felt the joy of travel was due to the fact I visited the unknown places. 1st day was the same route with 2 years ago and 2nd day, Tombstone was similar with Old Tucson Studio 2 years ago, too. However today's places were all unknown and both El Paso and Roswell were not picked up on Japanese guide books.
Therefore I have little information in advance and I walked around unknown city with a map from the hotel, which is the way that I traveled before Internet became common.

3日目の今日もLA時間で6時起きしたが、今日は3日目にしてようやく旅行らしさを感じることのできる1日となった。

まず最初にある目的のために適当に車を走らせていたら、目的につながる道を発見。その目的とは高台からエルパソの街を一望すること。Rim St.という名前(崖っぷちの通り)からひょっとしてと思ったら、本当に山の斜面をクネクネと登る道だった。そこを上っていくと、金持ちは高いところに住むというロスと同じ理論で豪邸が立ち並んでいる。途中、展望台を発見！エルパソを手前、その向こうにメキシコを望む風景を堪能できた。
見知らぬ街を一望できるこの感覚は旅行ならではの楽しみの1つであり、初めて訪れる土地に着いたら、そこで一番高い建物に上るという自分の中の旅先のルールを久しぶりに実践できた。

そしてエルパソ郊外にあるミッション･トレイルというキリスト教伝播の道にある3つの古い教会を訪れた。3つとも白亜の城ならぬ、白亜の教会で、エーゲ海クルーズで見た白い家を思い出した。

予定より30分押しでエルパソを後にし、カールスバッド国立公園へ向かった。ネットで調べた結果、フリーウェイではないし、144マイルの距離が3時間かかるとなっていたので、てっきり制限速度が50マイルなのかと思っていたら、基本的には制限速度70マイルだったので、+5マイルで2時間で到着。途中、また国境警備隊が検問をしていたが、今回はCitizenだということにして、何事もなく通過。てか、エルパソ、どれだけ不法入国多いんだよ!

カールスバッドは3つのツアーがあり、1つはレンジャー引率のツアーだったが既に本日の分は売り切れということで残るは2つ。どちらも自分で勝手に回ってくださいというセルフ・ツアーなのだが、片方は2時間半前後、残る一方は1時間半弱ということだったので、短いほうを選んだ。地下229mまでエレベーターで降り、1周約2kmのトレイルを歩いたのだが、山口県の秋芳洞といい、オーストラリアのジュノラン・ケーブといい、このカールスバッドといい、最初に地上から洞窟に入ろうとした探険家の人たち、尊敬します！明かりの灯っていない洞窟内を地図もなしに探検するんだから、本当すごいです。
これら3つの鍾乳洞を比べると大きさはジュノラン、トレイルの遊び心というか、歩き終わった後の高揚感(冒険したぞ！感)はカールスバッドに歩があるが、鍾乳洞の作りそのものはどこも同じような感じではあるが、千枚皿のような種類があるのは秋芳洞のみなので、見た目の綺麗さ・神秘さという意味では秋芳洞が一番か？

そして宿泊先はUFO墜落の町として有名なロズウェル。
到着したのが18時だったので、レストラン以外のお店はほぼ閉まっていたが、さすがロズウェルというディスプレイが町のいたるところに見られる。例えば宇宙人の頭の街灯。ホテルの入り口に立つWelcomeの宇宙人広告など、いたるところに宇宙人がいる・・・。

今日、旅行らしさを感じられた理由はやはり今まで来たことのない場所を訪れたというのが大きい。1日目は2年前と同じルートで、昨日のツームストンも2年前のオールド・ツーソン・スタジオと同じ趣だった。しかし今日はまったくの未知の領域で、しかもエルパソもロズウェルも日本のガイドブックではほとんど取り上げられていない(エルパソはかろうじて地球の歩き方の全米編で数ページのみ取り上げられているが、ロズウェルに関しては地球の歩き方ですら扱っていない・・・)。
というわけで、事前情報もほぼない状態で、ホテルで入手した地図を片手に見知らぬ土地を歩くというインターネットの登場以前にしていた旅行スタイルを数年ぶりに体感した1日でした。
