I woke at 8am, 2 hours later than usual because of staying 2 nights at the same city. It was cloudy and I gave up the plan that I would rid on the longest ropeway in the world and climb up the mountain which was a bit lower than Mt. Fuji, 3113 meters high and had a nice view. There were heavy cloud and it seemed no visibility on the top...

Instead, I went to Old Town, Downtown and Univerysity of New Mexico in the morning, which were supposed to be visited afternoon.
Old Town is just like small Santa Fe and very interesting to walk around.
Downtown is small and nobody there because of the end of the year and looked dangerous. However I found the combined station of Amtrack and Greyhound and refilled my "traveling feeling" and reminded that I used to travel by Greyhound before.
Then I enjoyed the most famous shake at the most famous restaurant on route 66. Compared with the one of McDonald, it had much feeling of ice cream and stickiness than McDonald.

In the afternoon, I wondered which one I should go. Petroglyph National Monument that has a lot of wall-art of native American or the World Heritage, Chaco Culture National Historical Park, which is not so popular in Japan. At the end I decided to go Petroglyph N.M. that was 10 minutes drive from Downtown while Chaco took about 5 hours for round trip.
We could find the drawings on the piece of volcanic rocks on the slope of the hill. I heard there were more than 800 at the visitor center and thought I could find easily like 1 drawings per minute but it was not so easy. So I could enjoy it as if I was doing treasure hunt.

There were a variety of drawings such as something like horses, snakes and aliens and it was just like outside natural Indian museum. However there were some doodles as if we can find the ones at major sightseeing spots and I couldn't tell the fake ones from real ones.

There were some interesting places that I found in the brochures at the hotel. One of them is Chaco Culture I already mentioned above. Another one is Ice Cave.
Albuquerque is very interesting city which is not listed in Japanese guide book. Santa Fe is close and Carlsbad and White Sands is also easily accessible. New Mexico is really attractive!

この旅、初の同一都市での連泊ということで、今日はさらに1時間遅く、8時起き。天気曇り。というわけで予定していた世界一長いロープウエイに乗って、富士山よりやや低いが、標高3113mからアルバカーキを一望する計画は断念。山頂に雲がかかっていて、一望どころか、1m先も見えない気がした・・・。

というわけで午後から回る予定だったオールド・タウン、ダウンタウン、ニューメキシコ大学を午前中に回った。

オールド・タウンはサンタフェを小さくした感じで歩いていて楽しい。
ダウンタウンはこじんまりとしていて、年末ということもあり、人気はなく、治安は良くなさそう。しかし長距離電車アムトラックと長距離バス・グレイハウンドの合同駅舎を見つけて、"旅してる"感を補充。昔はグレイハウンド使ってよく旅したな・・・と感慨にふける。
そしてルート66でおそらく最も有名なレストランの最も有名なメニュー、シェイクを味わった。マック・シェイクと比べて、ドロドロ感が薄く、どちらかというと粘り気が高く、アイスクリームの感覚がたぶんに残っている。

そして午後は時間があれば行ってみたいと思っていた2つ、ネイティブ・アメリカンの壁画がたくさんあるペトログリフ国定公園か日本ではほぼ無名の世界遺産、チャコ・カルチャー国立歴史公園かを迷うが、時間的に中心街から10分足らずで行けるペトログリフに決定(チャコは滞在時間も含めると往復で5時間近くかかる)。
丘の斜面に転がる黒い火山岩の破片にインディアンが書いた絵を見つけることができるのだが、800以上あるとビジター･センターで言われたので、1分に1個は見つかるかと思いきや、これがなかなか見つからない。なので、宝探しをしているような感覚で楽しめた。

絵には馬っぽいもの、蛇っぽいものから、宇宙人だろ、これは！的なものまで幅広いセレクションになっており、大自然の中のインディアン美術館といったところ。ただし、日本の観光地で見られるようなイタズラ書きっぽいものもあり、どれが本物でどれがイタズラかわからないものもあった。

ホテルで見つけた観光案内情報の中に興味を引くものがいくつかあった。1つは上述のチャコ・カルチャー国立歴史公園で、もう1つがアイス・ケーブという氷の洞窟。

考えてみればアルバカーキも歩き方には載っていないが、楽しい街だった。近くにサンタフェもあり、少し足を伸ばせばここ3日で訪れたカールズバッドやホワイトサンズにも行ける。ニューメキシコ州、捨てたもんじゃない！
