The Day 3, enjoying the music in Tennessee and cave in Kentucky.

It never happened in Memphis but we could see a lot of cicadas as we got into Nashville area. There were many cicadas at the motel we stayed for 2 nights and crying a lot. We also witnessed a lot of them crashed into windshield on the freeway. The size a bit smaller than Japanese ones but the orangish eyes and wings are quite different.

Whatever it is, we drove North from Nashville and crossed state-border of Kentuchky. After 90 minutes drive, we arrived at the world longest cave, Mammoth Cave National Park. This is also World Heritage and guides brought us to tours and there are various kinds. We picked up Hitory Tour but there were also limestone cavern tours, underworld lake tours and a lot more interesting tours.

The tour explored the underworld as the film "Lord of the Ring" and I returned to my childhood. On the way, we passed through "Fat Man's Misery" which is narrow path as name means, also we went through lower ceiling getting down and it became slope as low as it was. It was really fun exploring.
I hope I can come back and join other tours when I revisit Nashville.

Originally we planned to visit a giant hotel in the suburbs of Nashville but we spent more time at Mammoth Cave and we went through and headed for Memphis. After 4 and half hours drive, we arrived at Memphis. Mississippi River runs west of downtown and another side of the river is Arkansas State. Therefore we acrossed the bridge and went beyond the state-border again. I expected to have a nice view of downtown Memphis but there were dismal area and a lot of bushed blocked our view.

We crossed the bridge and came back to Memphis and checked-in the hotel. We left our baggages in the room and went to Beale Street. It was the last supper and entered into the famous bar, B.B. Kings to listened blues. I ordered float for the first time in more than 10 years. It was the best drink to close the day of enjoying childhood.

Nashville has a stage nearby the entrance while Memphis has the stage on back. Nashville doesn't charge entrance fee while Memphis does. Both cities are well-known as music cities but I wondered if the difference of country and blues made these detailed difference.

Next day, we finally returned to Los Angeles.

テネシー州で音楽を・・・、ケンタッキーで洞窟を楽しむ旅、3日目。

メンフィスではそんなことはなかったのだが、ナッシュビル周辺になると急にセミが多くなり、2日泊まったモーテルにも多くのセミがおり、ミンミン鳴いていた。そして高速道路でフロント・ガラスにぶつかっては死んでいくというプロセスを多く目撃した。大きさは日本のアブラゼミを一回り小さくしたくらいだが、綺麗なオレンジ色がかった翼や目は日本のそれとは大きく違っている。

それはさておき、今朝はナッシュビルから北へ向かい、途中ケンタッキー州との州境を超え、1時間半のドライブの末、世界一長い洞窟、マンモス・ケーブ国立公園に到着。世界遺産でもあるこの公園はガイドに連れられてツアー形式で回るのだが、そのツアーの数が多い。自分たちが回ったのはHistory Tourという洞窟の歴史を学びながら回るツアーだったが、鍾乳洞を見れるツアーだったり、地底湖を回るツアーなど、いろいろと楽しそうなツアーが目白押しだった。

ツアーは映画「ロード・オブ・ザ・リング」の世界さながらに地底を探検するといった感じで童心に戻ってはしゃいだ。途中「Fat Man's Misery(肥満人の悲劇)」という名前通りの太った人が通るには細い道だったり、天井が肩くらいの高さしかないところをかがんで歩いたり、その高さのまま斜面になったり、本当に楽しい探検だった。
またいつか、ナッシュビルに戻ってきた時に他のツアーにも参加してみたい。

予定ではナッシュビル郊外の巨大ホテルに立ち寄ってからメンフィスに戻る予定だったのだが、マンモス･ケーブで予想以上に時間がかかったため、ナッシュビルは素通りでメンフィスへと向かった。4時間半のドライブの末、メンフィスに着いた。メンフィスのダウンタウンのすぐ西側にミシシッピ川が流れており、川を越えるとアーカンソー州になる。というわけで、メンフィスのダウンタウンに行く前に、橋を渡り、州を越えた。川の向こうからメンフィスのダウンタウンが見えるかと期待していたのだが、橋を越えたところは湿地帯で低木が茂っていたため、残念ながらメンフィスのスカイラインを楽しむことはできなかった。

再び橋を渡り、メンフィスに戻り、ホテルにチェックイン。荷物を預け、Beale Streetに向かった。旅行最後の晩餐ということで、B.B. Kingという有名なバーでブルースを聴きながらの夕食。久々にフロート(コーラにアイスクリームを入れた)を頼んだ。十数年ぶりに頼んだフロートは童心に返った1日を締めくくるには最高のドリンクだった。

ナッシュビルは入り口側にステージがあったのに対し、メンフィスは店の奥にステージがあり、ナッシュビルは基本的に入店料がないのに対し、メンフィスは入店料がチャージされる。音楽の聖地として名高い2都市だが、カントリーとブルースという音楽性の違いがこういう細かい部分にも違いを生み出していたのだろうか？

明日はいよいよLAに戻る。
