Day 4, woke up at 9am. Checking out but deposit the baggage at the hotel and went to MIT. MIT is the main location of the film "GOODWILL HUNTING", and personally, have strong feeling than Harvard. At the campus, everytime I found a janitor not student, I asked myself was he Matt Damon?

The buildings had a wide variety from stylish as designers mansion to old Greek style temple. The Coop has less amount items than Harvard but a lot of humor on T-shirts than another. The one using chemical signs and creating words, chemical formula, self-deprecating such as otaku pride. Other visitors also laughed.

Next is Harvard. The main gate was close, actually all the gates were closed except the one at the north. What a closed campus? The campus is smaller than MIT. Much smaller than universities in Japan. Bacause of the oldest university in US, the stained glasses reminded European tastes.

I had a lunch in China town again. This time, it was true Chinese. It was the restaurant Seiji Ozawa, Japanese famous conductor visited, Hong Kong Eatery and ordered wonton noodle and spring rolls. Wonton was wonderful!! It had shrimp inside, and just like chinese dumpling.

Then I visited Boston Musuem of Fine Arts, one of the 3 biggest museum in US. I visited Chicago Museum but it was more than 10 years ago and I didn't remember at all and I couldn't compare both. Usually they will close at 5pm but every Wednesday they open until 9pm. Some of the features are Monet and Renoir from Impressionism and Gauguin, that we saw it in the textbook. All of these are displayed in one room and it made that room super luxury with its total value of a couple of hundred million dollars.

It also has Egyptian unearthed objects. There was one attractive work, which was by Picasso. It was surprising for me that Picasso wrote such simple drawing.
I stayed for 4 hours and picked up my baggage at 7pm at the hotel and killed time until the train departure, 9:30pm.

Finally, I got on the midnight express!! 9:30pm, the train departed as scheduled. I wondered how I checked in my baggage but I could bring it into the train and put in on the shell over the head. The people who had larger cases put it into wider space among seats. When I rode on the train in the west coast before, I checked in my baggage into the laggage cargo. So is this the change in 10 years or the difference between west coast and east?
I studies about Baltimore for 30 minutes, and got sleep. There was 40-minutes waiting time at New York and went out of the station. It was in front of central library and could see Empire State Building. Then train left and fell asleep.

4日目、9時起き。チェックアウトして、荷物はそのままホテルに預け、MITへ。映画「グッドウィルハンティング」の舞台であり、個人的にはハーバード大学よりも思い入れがあった。キャンパスに着くと、学生じゃなくて、用務員っぽい人間を見つける度に君はマット・デイモンか？と思ってしまう。

さて建物はデザイナーズ・マンションか？と見間違うようなスタイリッシュなものから古代ギリシア神殿風のものまで幅広くそろっている。お土産を買いに行った生協の品揃えは昨日のハーバードのそれとは比べものにならないくらい品数は少ないが、それでもTシャツのネタはハーバードよりも豊富。知性が少し垣間見える化学記号を使った造語、化学式のものからオタクのプライド的な自虐的なものまで面白い。他にいた客も笑っていた。

続いてハーバードへ。正門が閉ざされている。というか、北側の1つの門を除き、すべて閉じられている。なんだ、この閉鎖的なキャンパスは？キャンパスはMITよりもかなり狭い。というか日本の大学よりも狭いんじゃないか？と感じたくらいだ。聖堂で見たステンドグラスはアメリカ最古の大学だけあって、さすがにヨーロッパの匂いを感じることができた。

昼は再びチャイナタウンで、今度こそ、中華。マエストロの小澤征爾も訪れたことがあるらしい香港小店という店でワンタン・ヌードルと春巻きを頼んだ。ワンタン・ヌードルの麺は固めであまり美味しくはないが、ワンタンが劇ウマ！中に海老が入っており、ワンタンというよりは点心だ。

印象派の部屋
そしてアメリカ三大美術館の1つであるボストン美術館へ。シカゴ美術館には行ったことがあるが、もう10年以上前のため、ほとんど覚えておらず、展示内容とか、広さとか比較できません。普段は17時までなのだが、毎週水曜のみは21時まで開いている。ここの目玉は印象派のモネ、ルノアール、ゴーギャンらの教科書で一度は見たことのある作品たち。それらが一室に集められていて、その部屋だけで時価数百億くらいはあるようなとてつもなく豪華な部屋になっている。

さらに美術館とは言いながら、エジプトの遺跡発掘物があったりもして、博物館といっても良い。なんとなく心魅かれた作品の作者を見てみるとピカソだった。ピカソもこんなシンプルな絵を描いていたんだなぁと関心させられた。
4時間ほどいて19時にホテルで荷物を受け取り、電車の出発が21時半だったので、ホテルで写真の整理をして時間をつぶした。

そしていよいよ深夜特急へ！21時半、予定通り出発。荷物をどうやってチェックインするのか？と思っていたが、そのまま持ち込んで棚の上に乗せることができた。しかし大きな荷物を持っていた人は座席の間が広いところに置いていた。昔、西海岸で乗った時は荷物は別の専用車両に預けていたのに、10年で変わったのか、西海岸と東海岸の違いか？
30分ほどバルチモアの予習をして、眠りについた。NYで40分ほど待ち時間があったので、外に出てみた。図書館のまん前で、エンパイア・ステート・ビルも見えた。そして電車が出発し、再び眠りに着いた。
