Baltimore Scenary バルチモアの街並み

The train arrived at Baltimore, 10 minutes earlier than scheduled before 6am. It was completely dark outside. I went to the hotel and left the baggage and walked around. I visited Washington Monument, which is a few minutes walk away from the hotel. The sunrise view from there was impressive. I had some experience that sunset impressed me before but it was the first time sunrise did since Grand Canyon and Monumnet Valley.

Then I visited Fort McHenry National Monument and Histroci Shrine where national anthem of US was born. It was star-shaped fortress built for Independence War against British. Therefore this location is must-see point to follow the theme of this trip, tracing the history of US early days.

I returned to downtown. After I visited Babe Ruth Birtplace (it was also closed again...), walked around Inner Harbor. Baltimore harbor is really modern while Boston has a traditional ambience.

After a strolling for a while I came back to the hotel to check-in. This trip has a huge gap between outside and inside. Outside is so called (it snowed a bit this day) while inside is warm with heater. In addition to these conditions, because I took a midnight train last, I was exhausted and took a nap for an hour.
Then I went back to Inner Harbor again to take night illumination. I stopped at Hard Rock Cafe. They turned off all the store lights as Las Vegas arcade does and had a spectacular show screening wonderful footage on the building wall for 10 minutes and all the audience enjoyed a lot!!

I had planned to have seafood buffet for a dinner but the restaurant moved away a few months ago and quit buffet at that time. I was so disappointed. The price of appetizers went over $20, which was too expensive for me and went to Chinese nearby.

I booked Greyhound ticket after returning to the hotel and I found I needed to leave 30 minutes earlier because the bus station moved away from the place that the guide booked telling.

バルチモアには予定より10分ほど早く6時前に到着。外はまだ真っ暗。とりあえずホテルに行って、荷物だけ預けて街歩きへ。ホテルの近くにあった小高い丘の上にあるワシントン･モニュメントに行った。そこから見える朝焼けは感動させられた。夕焼けで感動することは今までに何度もあったが、朝焼けで感動するのはグランド・キャニオンとモニュメント・バレー以来だろうか？

そしてマックヘンリー要塞というアメリカ国歌が誕生した場所を訪ねた。対英国向けに独立戦争に備えて作られた海沿いにある星形の要塞で、今回の旅のテーマの1つであるアメリカ誕生の歴史を辿る上では外せないポイントと言える。

その後、ダウンタウンに戻り、ベーブ・ルースの生家を訪ねた後(ここも閉館中)、インナー・ハーバーを散策。ボストンの港町が昔の雰囲気が残っているのとは対照的に、バルチモアは近代的。

しばらく散策した後、一旦チェックインするためにホテルに戻った。しかし、今回の旅は外は極寒(今日はちょっと雪がぱらついた)、中は暖房で、出入りが激しかったこと、そして今朝というか昨夜は夜行列車だったこともあり、かなり疲れがたまっていたので、1時間ほど仮眠を取り、再びインナー・ハーバーへ。
夜景を撮るのが目的だったが、HRCの前で足を停めた。ラスベガスのアーケードと同じように、周囲のイルミネーションが消え、壁に電影を映し、10分ほど壁一面に電影アートが映し出され、大いに盛り上がった。

夕飯はシーフード・ビュッフェを食べようと思っていたら、数ヶ月前にお店が引越しをして、それを機にビュッフェはなくなったと聞いて、ガッカリ。しかも前菜でも$20を超えている・・・。高すぎて手が出ないので、近くにあった中華を食べた。

ホテルに戻り、グレーハウンドのチケットを取ったが、バス・ステーションがガイドブックにあったところから引越したらしく、明日の朝、30分ほど早く出る必要がわかった。
