Woke up at 8am and ate breakfast at the hotel and checked out at 8:30am. I left for Greyhound Bus Terminal. It located convenient place in downtown until a few years ago but they moved to outlying area where can't be reached by public transportations. Why they do that?

Whatever, the bus arrived at Philadelphia in safe. I completely slept for 2 hours on ride. This bus terminal is really convenient location next to the subway station and tried to go to the hotel. However the entrance was not subway but suburban train and second try brought me to the underground trolley. Then finally I could get on the subway for the third try.
It took 15 minutes to the closest station to the hotel and another 15 minutes from the station to the hotel by walk. Walking through complete residential area, I could arrive at the hotel. I worried a bit on the way but it was nicer hotel than I expected even though there were only one restaurant and the interchange of freeway around the hotel. The only thing was the distance from the closest station.

I went back to downtown after check-in. I got off at the City Hall station. Once getting outside, it was the very center of the City Hall. It was open ceiling space surrounded by the building and the subway exit brought that center place. I wanted to climb up the tower of the City Hall however it was already full for the day and no tour over the weekend and I couldn't make it tomorrow. I had similar experince on this trip many times...

After having lunch at McDonald (there were homeless inside crying out something and the staff conducted away him...), I made toward Philadelphia Museum of Art. I stopped by Rodin Museum on the way but it was closed due to renovation. Again!? The only consolation for me was that I could see the famous work "The Gates of Hell".

There were a lot of national flags hanged over the main avenue in front of the Museum and found unknown flags and name of the countries and it was really enjoyable moment. Arriving at the Museum, there was a statue of "Rocky", which made this museum very famous because of the film. Walking up the main stairs listening to the theme of Rocky, some people ran up there running the theme from the speaker with a big volume. Top of the stairs, there were footprints of Rocky. I felt I was satisfied but it was just a beginning.

Compared with Boston Museum, it has less features but still have a Gogh's "Sunflower", Cezanne's "The Large Bathers" and Monet's "Water Lily" series. The large difference from other museums was the replica of its original country and era. On that point, Philadelphia might be the no.1 museum in US.

This museum closes at 5pm usualy but there is one day opening until 9pm just like Boston does and that day was Friday when I visited. Besides, this museum has a live music performance at the grand staircase from 5pm. The entrance for this event was free and a lot of people gathered. They started to dance that we could never see in Japan. When I tried to leave, "My Girl" was started to play and enjoyed till the end by myself...

The outside was already dark. Walking down to the City Hall and bought some pins at Hard Rock Cafe nearby. Returning to the hotel, I made out for the next door restaurant to have a dinner where no tourists visit. I found it won awards a lot of times and made my expectations high! I ordered famous Philly Cheese Stake Sandwich and crab cakes that I couldn't make it in Baltimore. Both dishes were fantastic!! The hotel was far from the station but this restaurant solved that problem.

8時起きで、ホテルの朝食を食べ、8時半にチェックアウト。グレイハウンドのバス・ターミナルに向かう。しかし数年前まではダウンタウンの便利な場所にあったのに、なぜわざわざ公共交通機関では普通に行けない辺鄙な街外れに引越しをするんだ？

何はともあれ、バスは無事最終目的地、フィラデルフィアに到着。移動の2時間はガッツリ睡眠。こちらのバス・ターミナルは地下鉄駅に隣接するとても便利な場所にあって、到着して直ぐにホテルへ向かうが、地下鉄だと思って入ったところが近郊列車で、次に行ったのが地下鉄じゃなくて、地下発着のトロリー、3度目の正直でようやく目的の地下鉄へ。
ホテルの最寄り駅までは15分、そこから徒歩でまた15分。完全なる住宅街を横目に辿り着いたホテル。途中、大丈夫か？と思っていたが、着いてみるとなかなかのホテル。周りにはレストランと高速のインターしかないが、駅から遠い点を除けば悪くはない。

チェックインして、再度ダウンタウンへ。市庁舎駅で降りて、外に出るとそこは市庁舎のど真ん中。市庁舎が中央吹き抜けの四方を囲んだつくりになっていて、その中央部分に出るという珍しい市庁舎だった。そのタワーに上りたかったのだが、既に定員オーバー、しかも週末はやってないので、明日は上れない。なんか今回、こういうの多くないか？

そしてマックで昼食を済ませ(ホームレスが意味不明に喚いていて、店員に追い出されてた・・・)、フィラデルフィア美術館へ。途中ロダン美術館に寄ったが、ここもリフォーム中で閉館。またかよ！？でも有名な"地獄の門"は見れたので良しとしよう。

美術館前の大通りには各国の国旗がぶらさがっていて、中には見たことのない国旗や聞いたことのない国名もあり、歩いていて楽しい。そして美術館に到着。映画「ロッキー」で一躍有名になったこともあり、記念の銅像が立っている。そして"ロッキーのテーマ"をかけながら、大階段をのぼっていると、スピーカーで大音量で同じテーマ曲をかけながら階段を駆け上る人がちらほら。そして階段を上りきると、そこにはロッキーの足跡が刻まれている。これで満喫した！って、感じになったりもするが、本編はここから。

ボストン美術館と比べると目玉の数は少ないが、それでもゴッホの「ひまわり」やセザンヌの「大水浴」、そしてモネの「睡蓮と日本橋」と一度は目にしたことのある作品がいくつもある。ボストンや他の美術館と大きく違っていたのは絵画の展示だけではなく、その国や時代の建物をまるごと再現して展示している点。このやり方は博物館のやり方だが、フィラデルフィア美術館はその点においてはアメリカ一の美術館かもしれない。

普段は17時に閉まるのだが、ここもボストンと同じように週に一度21時まで空いている日があり、それが今日、金曜だった。しかもここの美術館は17時過ぎから大階段のところで生演奏が始まる。これだけなら入場は無料ということで、多くの人が集まってきた。そしてさすがにアメリカ、皆ダンスを始めた。日本では絶対にあり得ない光景が目の前で繰り広げられる。しかも帰ろうと思った直後に「My Girl」の演奏が始まり、最後まで聞き入ってしまった・・・。

外に出るとやはり真っ暗。市庁舎まで歩き、そのまま近くのHRCでピンを購入。ホテルへ戻り、向かいにある絶対に観光客が行かないであろう地元民オンリーのレストランへ。入ってみると、地元雑誌でベスト・レストランを何度も受賞していることがわかり、期待度UP! フィリー名物のチーズ・ステーキ・サンドとバルチモアで食べれなかったこともあり、クラブ・ケーキを注文。どちらも絶品！駅から遠いホテルだったが、このレストランのおかげでそれも解消された。
