Woke up at 9am and had a breakfast at the hotel. Then visited next station, AT & T station. There were 3 big stadiums in one location that I could see from Greyhound bus. There were a lot of people even though it's the very end of the year because of the ice hockey game, one of the 4 big sports in USA, and a lot of branch stores set the boothes. McDonald aldo distributed free coffee and I took it and left for downtown.

I got off at City Hall station expecting that I could take photos without considering effects of the shadow of buildings around. However there were indeed shadows and gave up photo shootings and went to Independent National History Park.
It can be called as birth place of USA. Declaration of Independence was adopted here, also constitutional convention happened here. Then here was the capital once before. Liberty Bell, which has a crack is the feature of Philadelphia sightseeing. It is treated as symbol of liberty nowadays and protected in safe even though it never rings again.
Then visited several points such as first bank in US and the bar which already opened before the independence, and walked around the inside park and went to waterfront.

According to the information that there was a fireworks show from 6pm at the information center, I went to see it. It was a kind of practice-run for countdown. The west side of Delaware River is Pennsylvania including Philadelphia while east side is New Jersey with Camden city. Fireworks came from the middle of the river.
Camden side put people on the battlship and created great view, fireworks over the cannon. Philadelphia side also had a nice view that fireworks over the ice-skating rink. It last for 10 minutes and reminded me the fireworks in New York on Independence Day.

I couldn't see the countdown one because of the time of last train. Instead, I could find a beautiful illuminations on the way back to the hotel, located one block off the main street. I felt small happiness with that illuminations at the lvery last night of the year 2011.

9時起きで、ホテルの朝食を食べ、最寄駅の1つ南、AT&T駅へ向かった。グレイハウンドから見えた大きなスタジアムが3つ隣接する珍しい場所がそこだと知ったので、行ってみた。大晦日だというのに人が多いと思ったら、アメリカの4大スポーツの1つ、アイスホッケーの試合があるらしく、いろんな店が出ていた。マクドナルドも無料でコーヒーを配っていたので、それをもらってダウンタウンへと向かった。

市庁舎の駅で降りて昼間なら影の具合を考えずに写真が撮れるかと思ったが、高層ビルの影で変わらず。写真撮影は諦めて、インディペンデンス国立歴史公園を訪ねた。
アメリカ誕生の地とも言えるこの場所。独立宣言が採択され、憲法制定会議も行われた、そして一時はアメリカの首都も置かれていた。そして自由の鐘と呼ばれるヒビの入った鐘はフィラデルフィア観光の目玉の1つ。鳴らなくなってしまった今も自由の象徴として大切に保護されている。
他にもアメリカ最初の銀行や独立前からやっていたという居酒屋、それらアメリカ創世記の建物が数多く残る敷地内を歩き周り、ウォーターフロントへ。

18時から花火が上がるという情報をインフォメーション・センターで入手したので、それを見に行った。カウントダウンの予行演習とでも言うべき花火。デラウェア川を挟んで西がフィラデルフィアのあるペンシルバニア州、そして東はカムデンという都市のあるニュージャージ州。その川の中央から花火が打ち上げられた。
カムデン側では軍艦に客を載せ、大砲の向こうに橋と花火が見えるという絶景を作り上げていた。方や自分のいた西側も屋外スケート・リンクの向こうに橋と花火が見えるという景色。花火は10分ほど続いたが、独立記念日にニューヨークで見た花火を思い出させる感動の花火でした。

終電の時間があるので、カウントダウンは残念ながら見れなかったが、ホテルに帰る途中、1本道を奥に入ったところでとてもキレイなイルミネーションを見つけることができて、小さな幸せを感じた大晦日、2011年最後の夜でした。
