I went to business travel to so-called "tropical island" for the first time in 20 years since I visited Guam with my family when I graduated elementary school. The destination is Hawaii I had thought I'd never visit in private.
The flight from Los Angeles was packed with Chinese tourists and languages and cabin attendants were also Chinese even though it was US carieer... China money is so strong nowadays.

There was one surprise at the airport. It didn't take even 1 minute from the borading gate to the outside. Usually we need to pass through facilities such as snack bars, souvenier shops, bagage claim and so on and takes 10 minutes at the fastest case. I couldn't believe it even it was domestic flight but it took less than 1 minute.
Another thing I'd like to mention is less windows. From my experience, airports should be huge closed place but this Honolulu International Airport is something like open-air airport and less windows and it was filled with outside air.

It was 3 nights 4 days stay but I had meetings during daytime and I could do sightseeing after sunset. So I took photo of King Kamehameha where nobody else existed and also I walked aroud Waikiki at night.
However I could stop by "HITATCHI" tree and Waikiki Beach under the sun somehow using extra time moving one location to next.
The ones I could say it was "very" sightseeing were Diamond Head climbing and sunrise, Fireworks at friday night and night view of Waikiki from Tantalus hill.

I always hike at Griffith Park every weekend in Los Angeles, I could enjoy the climbing up Diamond Head as well. But I was surprised at the huge number of Japanese tourists... They sat down on the half side of the stairs to the lookout at the top. I drove a rented car and there were not so many cars at the parking lot of the base and I guess probably only less than 100 people were climbing but there were more than 100 Japanese tourist on optional tour.

I was also surprised at the a lot of Japanese signs in town. I could see a lot of Japanese letters and hear Japanese language inviting tourists to their shops. Especially, there are more Japanese tourism guide-book than English (I could see some Korean and Chinese one, too).

The biggest difference between Hawaii and Los Angeles I felt was the "time". In one word, it is "slow". Most cars keep speed limit (rather running slower than limit) and waiting time for traffic lights is very long. I felt it was twice as long as Los Angeles that lights change from red to blue. Also people I met at the meeting handle less emails and phone calls.

I thought sightseeing in Hawaii was nothing. What I felt after I visited Hawaii, nothing changed regarding sightseeing but it might be really comfortable when it comes to living in Hawaii. "Slow" in good meaning made me felt really comfortable during this 3 nights 4 days trip.

小学校卒業の時に家族旅行で行ったグアム以来20年ぶりのいわゆる"南国の島"に出張してきた。今回訪れたのはプライベートでは行くことはないと思っていた場所ハワイ。 LAからのフライトは中国人ツアー客だらけで、機内は中国語で埋め尽くされ、アメリカ系の航空会社なのに、なぜかCAも中国人だらけ・・・。チャイナ・マネー、こんなところにも進出か？

空港に着いて驚いたのが、飛行機を降りて徒歩1分で外に出れる点。普通であれば、搭乗ゲートから売店・お土産屋、バゲージ・クレームなどといった施設を通過して空港の外に出るまでに早くても10分はかかる。いくら国内線とはいえ、搭乗ゲートから1分以内で外に出れるとは・・・。
そして窓が少ない。空港と言えば、建物全体が大きな密閉空間というのが、記憶にある限り通例だったが、ホノルル国際空港はオープン・エア空港とでも言うのだろうか、窓があまりなく、外気が空港内にあふれていた。

3泊4日の滞在だったが、昼間はミーティングばかりで観光が出来たのは夜、日が沈んだ後のみ。というわけでカメハメハ大王の銅像も他に誰もいない暗闇の中での撮影だったし、時間をかけてワイキキを歩いたのも夜。

しかし、ミーティングからミーティングの移動の合間を上手く使って、"日立の木"(この木、何の木？気になる木)やワイキキ・ビーチなどは日の出ている時間帯に立ち寄ることが出来た。
観光らしい観光は朝5時半起きで行ったダイアモンドヘッドの登山＋日の出鑑賞と、ミーティングの際に教えてもらった金曜の夜の花火、そしてタンタラスの丘の夜景くらい。

ダイアモンドヘッドは、LAでも毎週末グリフィス・パークをハイキングしていることもあり、それと同じ感覚で登ることができたが、あまりの日本人ツアー客の多さに驚かされた。頂上部分に展望台があるのだが、階段の片側に腰を下ろす日本人の数ときたら・・・。自分はレンタカーだったし、ふもとの駐車場にある車の数からしても多くても100人いないだろうと思っていたら、ツアー客のみで100人以上はいた。

街中でも日本語表記の多さに驚かされたりした。トイレなどをはじめ、ありとあらゆる場所で日本語を見たり、客寄せの日本語を聞いたりする。中でも観光客向けの情報誌は英語よりも日本語のほうが多い(一部韓国語や中国語もあり、この2カ国が20年〜10年前の日本と同じように庶民が海外旅行を気軽に楽しめるようになりつつあることを感じた)。

LAと大きく違うと感じたのは時間間隔。一言で言えば"ゆっくり"なのだ。道を走っていると車は制限速度を守っているし(というか、制限速度よりも遅い車のほうが多い・・・)、信号の待ち時間も非常に長い。LAで赤から青に変わる時間の倍近く赤のまま。ミーティングで会った人たちも話していると1日のメールや電話の量もかなり少なく感じた。

行く前はハワイで観光・・・何が楽しいのだろう？と思っていた。そして今回実際に訪れてみて感じたのは、観光に関しては以前とあまり考えは変わっていないが、住むという観点からであれば、非常に快適かもしれないということ。良い意味での"ゆっくり"が心地良いと感じた3泊4日のハワイ滞在でした。
