There are two big anime-related events in south Calofornia in July every year.

First one is ANIME EXPO, which happens around July 4th, Independence Day, in Los Angeles. Through 4 days event, they will collect about 50,000 people (total number, it will count over 100,000), which is the biggest one as Japanese animation related event in North America.
Second one is COMIC-CON, which usually happens later July in San Diego (this year, it was middle of July...). They will gather more than 120,000 people everyday for their 4-days run. They began originally as an event focusing on American comics and Sci-fi movies however they become one of the top events involving Hollywood studios and their tickets will be sold-out withing a few hours on the day of release!!

Both events are famous to invite a lot of guests. ANIME EXPO always invite them from Japan or voice casts in US because of its nature of Japanese animation. Some of major guests were such as Morning-Musume in 2009, AKB 48 & Saki Aibu in 2010 and Hatsune Miku in 2011. On the other hand, COMIC-CON's guests are super-impressive line-up from Hollywood due to studio connections. From top actors like Harrison Ford, Angelina Jolie to well-known directors like George Lucas ("STAR WARS" franchise), James Cameron ("TITANICE", "AVATAR"), Peter Jackson ("THE LORD OF THE RINGS" series) and Steven Spielberg (no explanation required, right?), they attended this event in the past.

We can see a lot of cosplayers at both events. ANIME EXPO has more Japanese anime characters, variety of those like big names such as NARUTO, One Piece and EVANGELION through mid-night TV series. COMIC-CON has more American Comic heroes and Hollywood film characters such as Spiderman and Iron Man.

I have attended both events for the last 3 years on business. Due to world economic recession, entertainment industry also has some bad effects. One person from Japan told me that every year he attends film festival or film market, the number of attendance decreases. However these two events are the only exceptions and he felt there were more participants coming year by year.
I wonder animation whichever made-in-Japan or made-in-USA will save the enterainment industry in the depression.

毎年7月は南カリフォルニアでアニメ関連の2大イベントが開催されます。

1つ目が独立記念日前後にロサンゼルスで開催されるアニメ・エキスポ。4日間の開催期間中に、5万人弱(延べ人数ベースでは10万人を超える)の集客を誇り、日本のアニメ関連イベントとしては北米最大規模です。
2つ目は7月下旬(今年は中旬だったが・・・)にサンディエゴで開催されるコミコン。こちらは4日間の開催で1日平均12万人以上が訪れるというイベント。始まった当初はアメコミやSF/ファンタジー映画が中心のイベントだったが、いつしかハリウッドのスタジオさえも巻き込む一大イベントに成し、一般向けのチケットは発売当日数時間で売り切れるほど！！

両イベントともに多くのゲストを呼ぶのが売りで、アニメ・エキスポは日本のアニメということで、日本からのゲスト・あるいはアメリカ版の吹替え声優が多い。主だったゲストを挙げると、2009年はモーニング娘、2010年はAKB48と相武紗季、2011年は初音ミクといった具合。一方のコミコンはハリウッドのスタジオが絡んでいることもあり、そうそうたる顔ぶれが毎年揃う。ハリソン・フォード、アンジェリーナ・ジョリーといったトップスターから、ジョージ･ルーカス(「スター・ウォーズ」シリーズ)、ジェームズ・キャメロン(「タイタニック」、「アバター」)、ピーター・ジャクソン(「ロード・オブ・ザ・リング」シリーズ)、そしてスピルバーグ(説明不要でしょう？)といった世界に名を馳せる大監督も来場する。

そしてどちらもコスプレーヤーが見られるのだが、アニメエキスポは日本のアニメ・キャラが多くNARUTOやワンピース、エヴァといった王道アニメから深夜アニメのキャラまで幅広い。一方のコミコンはスパイダーマンやアイロンマンなどのアメコミやハリウッド映画のキャラクターが多い。

どちらとも、仕事絡みで今年で3年連続の参加。エンタメ業界も例に漏れず、世界的な不況のあおりを受け、映画祭や映画マーケットも毎年行くたびに人が減っているにも関わらず、この2つのイベントだけは例外だそうで、毎年人が増えている気がするらしい・・・とは日本から仕事関係でやって来る日本人の話。
エンタメ界の不況を救うのは日本製であれ、アメリカ製であれ、アニメなのだろうか？
