It was September 1st, waking up at 2:30am and left the airport. The destination is Rapid City and travel some spots around over Labor Day weekend.

It was 6am flight from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and I found 6am flight is the very first one of the day. I guess they prohibit the flight before 6am considering the effect on ambient surrounding.
The plane took off on time and arrived at Denver. It was 11 years to the day since 9/11 to visit this airport when I traveled Grand Circle. The roof of the airport was the same unique design featuring Rocky Mountains as it had been in 2001.

There was 20 minutes delay of the departure from Denver but it arrived in 10 minute delay at Rapid City. This was not international airport and therefore it was very small. Usually we need to ride on mini-van to go to the rental car office from the terminal but this airport has their offices in the terminal since their car parking at the airport space. Once getting outside of the terminal, it was hotter than Los Angeles even though Rapid City locates far north than LA. What a cool summer it is in LA!!

First I went to the downtown of Rapid City to kill the time because I would like to visit today's main dish, Devils Tower at sunset. I could find a lot of statues of successive presidents standing at every corner. Besides, they stood at all four corners of each intersection (actually, Lincoln wasn't standing but sitting).

Left downtown, I went to the destination. After 2 hours driving, suddenly Devils Tower came into the vision on the plain after climbing up the hill, which made me excited!!
I thought this is legendary place that the UFO landed (UFO actually landed here in Steven Spielberg's film "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"). Getting closer, its size knocked over me. After crossing the park gate, its enormous size still kept me surprised while I found some prairie dogs and they made me felt at ease.

It was really good balance between looking up "Devils Tower" and prairie dogs under foot. I could see wild turkeys and bisons. Bisons made me terrified a bit since one of them getting closer to me while I was taking some photos. One more animal, deer suddenly flied out twice from the roadside but there were enough time to take photos of them.

There was 1.3-mile (2km) trail around the base of the tower, I took a walk. Exchanging "Hello", some people told me there were people climbing up after they peered through binoculars. Using my camera's zoom funcation, I could find it. They put both arms and legs out to the side and climbed up through the use of frictions. I remembered I used to do the same at hallways and passages but I came back to earth that I couldn't do this at Devils Tower...
The trail brought me all the way around the tower and the tower showed me various faces according to its direction. Also the climbers can be found wherever I was at north, south, east or west.
I bought a hot dog at the store, outside of the gate and I was surprised at its lesuire price of $4.

On the way back to Rapid City, I stopped by Deadwood where the elderly couple recommended I met at Devils Tower. It was like historically important town but personally the impression of the store owned by Kevin Costner is much stronger. It's like a hot springs resort in Japan. It located in the mountains and city dwellers visited here on vacation. Actually there is no hot spring but there is one thing that relax Americans, that is CASINO! It's not so fabulous as Las Vegas and it has no advantage over Reno but it has unique feeling of hidden scenic spot because of the location in the mountain where big cities are far away.

I took a dinner at the restaurant in Rapid City where it was once fire station. One of my orders was incredibly delicious!! They hollowed out the mushroom and stuffed minced crab there, moreover they bakeed it with cheese on. I wanted to tell my appreciation directly to the chef who created this fantastic dish.
I notice the sales tax is only 5% while LA is 8.75%, which made me feel I had gained something.

I arrived at the hotel at 11pm and went to bed at 12:30am after organizing photos.

早朝2時半起きで、空港へ向かった9月1日。目的はLaybor Dayとなる9月第1月曜を含めた3連休でラピッド･シティを中心に国立公園などを回る旅。

ロサンゼルス国際空港(通称LAX)発6時の便だったのだが、どうやらLAXは6時が始発になるらしい。海沿いにあるのだが、おそらく6時以前は周辺への影響を考慮しフライトを禁止しているのだろう・・・。
飛行機は予定通り離陸、そして中継地点のデンバー国際空港へ。9/11直後にグランド・サークルを回った時にデンバーを基点にした時以来11年ぶりだったが、空港の屋根は昔と変わらずロッキー山脈をイメージしたものだった。

デンバーからラピッド・シティ行きの便は出発が20分ほど遅れたが、45分のフライトで10分遅れで到着した。ここは国際空港ではないので、非常に小さい。国際空港だと通常ターミナルから専用のミニバンなどでレンタカー会社の事務所に向かうのだが、ラピッド･シティーの空港ではターミナルに併設された駐車場にレンタカーも停められているので、事務所もターミナルの中にあった。ターミナルの外に出ると暑い！LAよりもかなり北にあるにも関わらず、LAよりもかなり暑い。どんだけ冷夏なんだよ、LA!!

まず向かったのはラピッド･シティのダウンタウン。本日のメイン･ディッシュであるデビルス・タワーは夕方に訪れたかったので、一応ダウンタウンということで時間つぶしがてら歩いてみた。マウント・ラッシュモアに近いからか町の交差点ごとに歴代大統領の銅像が建っている。しかも四つ角全てに"建"っている(リンカーンは"立"っておらず、座っていたが・・・)。

ダウンタウンを後にし、いよいよ目的の場所へと向かった。フリーウェイを2時間走って(長距離ドライブも久しぶりだったので、ちょっと疲れたな・・・)、山を越えたところから見える平原の中に突如、隆起したデビルス・タワーが見えて、一気にテンションが上がる！
おぉ、ここがUFOが着陸した伝説の場所か！？と、思いにふけりながらドライブ(映画「未知との遭遇」で監督のスピルバーグがこの場所をUFOの着陸場所として使ったことで一躍知名度があがった)。近づくにつれ、遠くから見たのよりも想像以上の大きさに圧倒される。公園ゲートをくぐるとさらにその大きさに圧倒されながらもふと足元を見るとプレイリー・ドッグがあちこちにいて、その愛嬌の良さに心が和む。

見上げれば"悪魔の塔"、しかし足元にはプレイリー・ドッグという何とも言えないアンバランスさが、なんか心地良い。他にもワイルド・ターキーとバイソンも見ることが出来た。バイソンは写真を撮っているうちに立ち上がり、土煙を上げながら近づいてきたので、ちょっと怖かった・・・。もう1種類、鹿が道路に2度も飛び出してきたが、写真を撮る余裕はなかった・・・。

タワーの麓に一周2km(1.3mile)のトレイルがあったので、そこを歩く。行き交う人と"Hello"と声を交わしながら、ところどころに置いてある双眼鏡を見た人が岩の間に人が登っているぞ!と教えてれる。カメラのズームを最大にして確認したら本当に人がいる。両手両足を目一杯横に広げて、その摩擦力を利用して上に登っている。昔廊下とかで同じようなことして遊んだな・・・なんて懐かしい思いにふけるも、この悪魔の塔にはとても登れないなぁと現実に戻った。
トレイルはタワーをぐるりと一周するのだが、東西南北、見る方向によって実に多彩な表情を見せる。また登っている人も東西南北問わずに見られた。
帰りがけにおなかが空いたので、ゲートのすぐ外にあるお店でホットドッグを1つ買ったのだが、これが$4もして観光地値段恐ろしいと思わされた。

デビルス・タワーを後にして、Rapid Cityに戻る途中、タワーで会った老夫婦が薦めていたDeadwoodという町に寄り道した。歴史的に重要な町らしいが、個人的にはケビン・コスナーが経営するお店がある町という印象が強かった。日本で言うなら温泉のない熱海といった感じだろうか？山の奥にある町でアメリカの都会の人が羽根休めに訪れる町といった感じ。温泉はないのだが、アメリカ人の心を癒すものがある。それがカジノ！ラスベガスほどきらびやかでもないし、レノにも劣るが、周囲に都会が全くないため、それなりに華やかに見えるし、山奥にあるので、秘境感みたいなものを入り混じって、この町に独特な雰囲気を醸し出している。

Rapid Cityに戻り、昔消防署だった建物を改装してレストランにしたお店で夕食。ここで頼んだ1つのメニューが激ウマ！マッシュルームの傘の中をくりぬき、そこにカニのすり身を詰め、さらに上にチーズをかけて焼いたもの。このメニュー考えた人間に会って、直接お礼を言いたいほどの美味しさだった。
支払いの際に消費税が5%強ということに気づき、何か得した気分になった(ちなみにLAは8.75%)。

そしてホテルに着いたのが23時。写真の整理をして24時半就寝。
