I woke up at 7am to take a breakfast at the restaurant that one guidebook introduced. However I couldn't find it and went to Rushmore without having a breakfast. 30 minutes drive brought me to the mountain road that had a lot of curves. Then after finishing one curve, there comes 4 presidents faces came out! Beside, there is a parking spot along the shoulder. I doubted if do we need to visit there with paying some fee...

Then I told myself what I was thinking after I came here all the way and I paid the entrance fee (actually it was parking fee not entrance fee) to go to the monument. After entering the gate, 4 faces came out ahead and there were flags displayed of 50 states, DC and other U.S. territories such as Guam, which made solemn atmosphere. These scenary is very American. I can't imagine similar monument with 47 flags of each prefecture and the mountain with faces of three biggest samurai ever (personally, I definitely try to watch it...).

There were a huge amount of people, different from Devils Tower yesterday. It showed the power of this site where gathering more than 2.5 million people a year. I took a walk on the trail around the base of the mountain for an hour. I could find mountain goats on the way.

After Rushmore, I visited another big sculpture named Crazy Horse. This is private while Rushmore is national. The descendants are still carving and unfinished. It will be the biggest sculpture once it's completed.

To be frankly, it was not so impressive with various reasons. One is the angle that we can see from the visitor center. There is only one angle that we can see from the visitor center and we never see its face from the front. Also Rushmore's level of the sculpture made me feel Crazy Horse is still far from the completion.

Originally I planned to go back to the motel and take a nap for an hour via Caster State Park. However it took more than expected to go through the park and arrived next destination in 1 hour delay.
This is due to some tunnels that only 1 car can pass through and cars in opposite direction had to wait for it besides a lot of winding roads.

And I arrived at the last destination of the day, Badlands National Park 10 after 4pm. Then I needed to make quick sightseeing at this location of the film "Dance with Wolves".

The first spot, Door Trail, was the gate to another planet as the name of the trail indicated. As you can see the photos, there were mysterious sceneary in front. I was just like to stray into another planet surrounded by pointed rocks that I could only see in Sci-Fi movies.

I repeated parking and photo-shooting at each view point. As a whole impression, it's like a calculation formula of (Arches National Park + Bryce Canyon National Park) / 2.
Also I could find a group of something like deers right after exiting the gate.

By the way, there were tons of signboard showing one store along the freeway from Rapid City to this national park. Ths store located close to the gate of the park and I stopped by. The name of the store is Wall Drug Store and very famous because of 5-cent coffee, and I ordered it with a donut. It's just ok...

Then I returned to the motel at 10:30pm after having a dinner at the restaurant across the street.

7時半起きで、ガイドブックに載っていたレストランで朝食をとろうと出発。しかしレストランが見つからないので、朝食抜きでそのままラッシュモアへ。ラピッドシティから30分ほど走るとカーブが続く山道に差し掛かる。そしてあるカーブを曲がり終えた瞬間、4人の大統領の顔が見えた！しかもご丁寧に路肩に駐車スペースまで用意されている。わざわざ料金払ってまで、見に行く必要があるのか！？と、一瞬雑念を思い浮かべてしまう・・・・。

いや、ここまで来て何を言っているんだ、俺！と気合を入れなおし、入場料金(正確には入場料は無料だが駐車代を払う必要がある)を払って、モニュメントへ。ゲートをくぐると山頂に4人の顔が正面に来るようになっていて、目線を下にそらすとアメリカ50州とワシントンDC、グアムなどの管轄地などを含めた旗が並び、荘厳な雰囲気を醸し出す。こういうのってとてもアメリカ的だ。日本で47都道府県の旗を並べて、その向こうに信長・秀吉・家康の顔が彫ってある岩山・・・というのは想像できない(個人的にはぜひ見てみたい気もするが・・・)。

昨日のデビルス・タワーとは違ってすさまじい人の数。さすがに年間250万人を超えるだけの集客力をまざまざと見せ付けられた。岩のふもとにあるトレイルを1時間弱かけて歩いた。途中マウンテン･ゴートを見つけた。

ラッシュモアの次はクレイジー･ホースという別の大彫刻を見に行った。ラッシュモアが国営なのに対し、こちらは民営。インディアンの英雄をその末裔が彫刻しているもので、まだ未完成の状態。しかし完成すれば世界最大の彫刻になるらしい。

未完成ということに加え、観覧可能な場所からの角度が1つしかなく(真横)、正面や裏側が見えないこともあり、さらにラッシュモアを見た直後ということも加わってか、やや残念。

そしてカスター州立公園を通過して、宿に戻って1時間ほど仮眠を取ろうと思っていたが、この州立公園が思った以上に時間を取られ、宿に戻るどころか次の目的地に着くのも1時間押してしまった。

というのはこの州立公園、山の中のくねくね道を行くだけでも時間がかかるのに、所々に車1台がギリギリ通れるくらいの幅のトンネルがあり、そこで交互に片側通行することでさらに時間がかかった。

そして本日、かつこの旅最後の目的地であるバッドランズ国立公園にたどり着いたのは4時過ぎ。というわけで映画「ダンス・ウィズ・ウルブス」のロケ地でもあるこの場所はやや駆け足で見ることになった。
最初に訪れたドア・トレイルはその名の通り、別の惑星への扉でした。写真を見てもらうとわかると思いますが、なんとも言えない不思議な世界が広がっていました。SF映画の中でしか見たことのないような先端が尖がった岩に囲まれた風景が目の前に広がっていて、本当に別の惑星に迷い込んでしまったかのような感覚になりました。

その後も園内のところどころにあるビュー･ポイントで車を停めては写真を撮る、の繰り返し。全体的な印象としてはアーチーズ国立公園とブライス・キャニオン国立公園を足して2で割ったような感じの国立公園でした。
そして公園のゲートを出てすぐのところに鹿の仲間のような動物が群れをなしていた。

ところでラピッド･シティからこの国立公園に向かう途中に何度も何度も嫌になるほど道路脇に巨大な看板が示すお店がある。そのお店が公園を出てすぐのところにあるので行ってみた。ウォール・ドラッグ・ストアという名前で5セント・コーヒーが名物のお店。というわけでその5セント・コーヒーとドーナツを頼んでみた。うん、普通・・・。

でもって、店を出てすぐ向かいにあったレストランでディナーを済ませ、ホテルに戻ったのが、22時半。
