Co-worker dropped me off at the airport on his return to home on Friday night. My flight to Toronto departed at 10pm. I could sleep well for 4.5 hours getting into the sleep before the departure and waking-up right before the landing. It was my first time to arrive at Toronto but there was no time to enjoy that atomosphere since I had only 90 minutes to transfer including immigration. It was really far from the landing gate to immigration and there was a long line when I got to the immigration. At that moment, only 60 minutes left. I could make a short-cut after telling a airport officer I didn't have time. When I arrived at the next gate, boarding had already started but I could be in time somehow.

It was similar small aircraft that I boarded from Denver to Rapid City the other day. However I didn't feel any shaking and arrived the destination. It was really impressing autumn color of leaves that I could see from the airplane right before the landing. I felt some good feeling for this trip but it rained a bit once I got out. I don't remember the rain on my trip for a long time even though I had a lot of experience of snow...
My destination is Quebec Cit. Population counts oer 600,000 and it is the capitol of Quebec Province and the 2nd largest city following Montreal in the province. However there is only one public transportation, taxi, from the airport to downtown. No city bus, no shuttle, no mini-van. It was unexpected and also impressing for me in different meaning.

I felt right meaning of impressions to see the autumn color. Taxi arrived at the hotel less than 20 minutes. I checked my baggage and went to downtown.
Quebec Province is the only area in Canada that they take French as official language and the city looks really fancy. Even McDonald has really nice appearance and it looked like stylish cafe or restaurant if there were no signboard. It was not red and yellow but green and yellow. There might be a law to keep the landscape to match its aspect like Kyoto and Mexico City. Arrived at the parliament buildings, there were Japanese tourists in a group and guide did detailed explanations.

I entered into old city through the city gate. Stone-paved street, horse cart and the luxury hotel with castle appearance away... There were the scenary of the medieval city in Europe!! All the signboards were written in French and I felt as if I were in France. Actually it reminded me of Rothenburg in Germany 11 years ago with its castle wall and compact city.
The signboards that I found in the old city also reminded me the ones in Germany. If it were written in German not in French, it must be Germany with no doubt.

I took a breakfast at the crape house that was introduced in a guidebook. It's not a fruit crape like Japan but we can select the filling by ourselves. Mainly there were two type, fruit or meal. I ordered egg, ham, spinach and mushroom out of 15 items. It was delicious because of my favorite mushroom!!

Then I walked around the old city. I found fantasic leaves in color and I noticed all the mountains around looked in red since the entire city is on the hill. I had one regret that if it were sunny...
Notre Dame de Quebec had a rare appearance, unsynmmetrical shape. The inside was really gorgeous with gold decorations. Looking back the entrance, there were huge pipe organ and it added more element of gorgeousness.

Then I arrived at Chateau Frontenac. This is a hotel symbolizing Quebec City as Statue of Liberty does in NY. The hotel tour was ended last year and I couldn't see the inside of the hotel. Also all the restrooms were locked with the key so that only guests can access, which made me had bad impression besides tour end. For the roof, I imagined it was bronze color but it was copper color due to the construction. But I thought copper is not bad at all.

I walked down governor's promenade and went into lower town of the old city. There were a luxury liner anchored in the river and also I could see the sail-out of the Queen Elizabeth II.

Then I went down to lower town via terrifying named, neck-fold steps. The name is horrible but this steps led me to the most fabulous area, Quarter of Petit Champlain. Down the base, there was a flagstone path and fancy shops stood both side of the street and Chateau Frontenac stood there once we looked up. That was my favorite spot in Quebec City with its "The Europe" view.
This area had huge illusionism drawings over the walls at each end of the street. Also the boards of silhouette with blue ribbon were attached on the wall along the street and made the street much fancy.
Finally, there was a luxury liner was anchored at the port and added some elements to the greatest view.

Since I had only 4 hour sleep in an airplane, I got back to the hotel and went to the bed.
On the way back to hotel, I found a black squirrel. I found a lot of quirrels during these past 2 month travels but the black one was for the first time and a bit surprised. I wonder if they became black to absorb much more sunlight since they live in colder area.

Canada locates far north and I brought winter clothes but it was colder than I expected even I put on the coat. So I felt very drowsy during daytime due to the huge difference of temperature between exterior and interior.

金曜の仕事帰りに同僚に送ってもらい、そのまま空港へ。22時発のフライトでトロントへ向かう。4時間半のフライトを離陸前から寝て、着陸寸前に目を覚まし、効率よく寝た。

そして人生初のトロント到着なのだが、それを味わっている余裕はない！というのは乗換えが1時間半しかなく、その間に入国審査も必要だったので・・・。しかし、到着したゲートから入国審査の場所までがメチャメチャ遠い。やっとたどり着いた審査場も長蛇の列！！この時点で残り1時間ジャスト。そこで係員に乗換えまで時間がないと伝え、ショート・カット成功！次の目的地のゲートへ到着すると既に搭乗が開始されていたものの、何とか間に合った。

つい先日、デンバーからラピッド・シティ行きで乗ったのと同じような小型機。しかし今回は激しい揺れを感じることなく、目的地に到着。着陸寸前に空から見えた紅葉にいきなり感動させてもらった。良い旅になりそうな予感・・・とは裏腹に空港を出ると小雨が降っている。旅行中の雨なんて、何年振りだろう？(雪なら嫌というほど味わったけど・・・)
たどり着いた目的地はケベック・シティ。人口は60万人を超え、ケベック州の州都であり、モントリオールに次ぐ、州第2の都市でもある。にも関わらず、空港から街までの公共交通機関がタクシーのみ。市バスも走ってなければ、シャトルバスや乗り合いタクシー的ミニバンすらないのだ。予想外の展開に違う意味で感動・・・。

空港を出ると空から見えた紅葉に再び正しい意味での感動を覚える。20分もかからず、ホテルに到着。荷物を預け、早速ダウンタウンへ。
ケベック州はカナダの中では唯一英語ではなく、フランス語を公用語としているだけあって、街がオシャレ。マクドナルドでさえ、看板がなければ、オシャレなカフェか、レストランといった外観だ。しかも赤と黄色じゃなくて、緑と黄色。ここケベック・シティも京都やメキシコ・シティのように政令でカラーリング指定されているのだろうか？州議事堂にたどり着くと日本人の団体がいて、ツアー・ガイドがいろいろと説明をしていた。

そして城門をくぐり、旧市街へ。石畳の街並みに馬車、そして遠くに城塞のようにそびえる高級ホテル。まさに中世ヨーロッパの景色が目の前に広がっていた！そして街中の看板も英語ではなく、フランス語のため、本当にフランスに迷い込んだかのようだ。というか、街が小さいエリアにまとまっていて、更に城壁に囲まれていることもあり、フランスではなく、11年前に訪れたドイツのローテンブルグを思い出した。
旧市街を歩いているとそこかしこにぶら下がる看板もドイツで見たそれを髣髴とさせる。これで表記がフランス語ではなく、ドイツ語なら間違いなくドイツである。

朝食を地球の歩き方に載っていたクレープ屋で食べる。クレープといっても日本のようにフルーツが入っているわけではなく、具は自分で選べる。おおまかにわけて日本と同じフルーツタイプと食事用の2つに分かれる。自分が頼んだのは食事用で具材は15種類近い中から好みに合わせて選べるスタイルで、卵、ハム、ほうれん草、そしてマッシュルームを入れてみた。マッシュルームが入っているだけで上手い！

そして、そのまま旧市街を散策。途中見事な紅葉を発見！というか町全体が高台にあるので、遠くのほうを見てみるとかなり紅葉していることがわかり、これで晴れていればなぁ・・・と悔いが残った。
ノートルダム寺院は今まで見てきたノートルダムの中でも珍しい左右非対称の外観。そして中身はこれでもかというくらいに派手な金！振り返るとパイプオルガンまで併設されており、その豪華さに拍車をかけていた。

そしてシャトー・フロントナックに到着。ケベック・シティの象徴ともいうべきホテル。楽しみにしていたホテル内見学ツアーは昨年をもって廃止されたとのことで、ホテル内部を見学することはできなかった。またこのホテルのロビー周辺にあったトイレはすべてカギがないと入れないようになっており、ツアーの件もあり、その閉ざされた感じに嫌な思いをした。
また外観も青銅色の屋根を写真で見ていたのだが、工事中のため、青銅ではなくただの銅になっていた。が、これはこれでありだと思った。

その後、総督の散歩道を歩き、そのまま旧市街のロワー・タウンへ。川には豪華客船が停泊しており、更にクイーン・エリザベス2号も出港していくという光景を見ることができた。

そして首折り階段という恐ろしい名前の階段を下ってロワー･タウンへ。名前は恐ろしいのだが、この階段は旧市街の中でも格段にオシャレなプチ･シャンプラン地区へと通じる階段で、階段を下りると石畳の細い道の両側にオシャレなお店が立ち並び、見上げればシャトー・フロントナックが城砦のようにそびえるという、"ザ・ヨーロッパ"の風景が目の前に広がるという個人的には一番のお気に入りスポットになった場所でもある。

この地区はメイン・ストリートの両端に建物の壁面に描かれた大きな騙し絵があり、また両端以外にも壁に青いリボンを巻いたシルエット状の板が貼られていて、この独特の雰囲気に色を添えている。
さらに港に足を運ぶと豪華客船が停泊しており、ヨーロッパの風景に更なる花を添えていた。

昨夜は飛行機の中で4時間ちょっと寝ただけなので、早めにホテルに戻り、就寝。ホテルに戻る途中、黒いリスを見つけた。この2ヶ月の旅で腐るほどたくさんのリスを見てきたが真っ黒なリスは初めてだったので、ちょっと驚いた。寒い地域だから、少しでも多くの日光を吸収するために黒くなったのだろうか？
そういえば、カナダはかなり北にあるので、冬服を持ってきたのだが、予想以上に寒く、コートを着ていても寒いくらいで、建物の中に入った時の寒暖の差が激しすぎて何度となく眠気に襲われた旅の一日目でした。
