Woked up at 8:30am. Since I stayed at B&B (Bed & Breakfast), I took a breakfast there. There was a bottle of maple syrup to put into a coffee. This is Canada!! It was really good taste. The sweetness of the maple matches the bitterness of the coffee adequately. It is heavily cloded again outside... I left for the falls located on the suburb.

I took a bus from the bus stop 5 minutes walk far from the B&B. 35 minutes ride from the bus stop brougt me to the final stop. There was nothing... I became anxious somehow but there was some sounds and I walked down to that sounds. There stood fences looking like KEEP OUT but there was one gate and entered and kept walking and arrived at unexpected place!!
I had expected that I would arrive at the base of the falls according to the photos from guidebooks and Internet however it was top of the falls!! It was really surprise for me.

The drop of Montmorency Falls is 83 meters and it exceeds the one of Niagara Falls. There are two drops and first one is really short while second one has the drop about 80 meters. There is a bridge between 1st and 2nd drops and we can look down the waterfall from straight above and it's free. There are lookouts on both side of the falls and also there is a ropeway gondola on west side. On the other hand, there is a long steps connecting some observatories reaching out to waterfall as if it is The Great Wall in China on east side. Getting down the base, heavy sheet of spray attacks us with its huge energy of the falls.
Moreover, this fall will freeze up in winter an ice climbers will gather to try climbing up this falls.

There are some small falls at the sides of big one and I imagined if each of these small falls got bigger, it would be 4 biggest falls with Niagara, Iguazu and Victoria. Also it was very impressive that there were some yellow colored water fell down at some points even though photo didn't tell exactly.
I wonder why specific point can be yellow. If it stems from the color of the shaved earth, it won't last forever and if it is original color of the water, it won't explain why it will be pinpoint-yellow not entire fals. Please somebody answer me!

Once I acrossed the bridge to the east, I could enjoy the harmony of red, yellow and green leaves. After all, I stayed there for 2.5 hours while I supposed to be there for 1 hour.

On the way back to the church that I saw from the bus to the falls, I found many houses that the stair outside going 2nd floor. Considering in these area 1st floor would be under snow in winter, I arrived at the church in 20 minutes.
It was locked but a priest opened it and welcomed me. Outer-look is really gorgeous as much as yesterday's Notre-Dame but inside was not as good.

I got back to the hotel and took a doze. Then I went to the old city again. The aim was shooting night view but once I got out, it rained quite steadily... I couldn't walk around without an umbrella. I took a bus again and visited VIA Rail station first to preview for tomorrow departure. It was not like a station but it was as if I were in a fairy tale world. Most American stations has Greek temple style appearance but this station is not like that but it is like a castle from the Middle Ages in Europe. Besides it was illuminated and its beauty stood out a lot.

The wind was too strong to keep the umbrella using since it located close to the coast. However if I didn't put up the umbrella, camera got wet... So I used my body and the umbrella somehow to protect the camera in safe to shoot the night view.

I went to have a dinner at the restaurant that the host of B&B recommended as a good restaurant to serve Quebec foods. It was also introduced on the guidebook. I ate the famous meat pie. Delicious!! There were no words other than "Delicious!" A garnish of steamed vegetables and potate salad were also great! They didn't have tourist price and it was around $15. This restaurant became one of the top restaurants for me.

It located at lower town, I walked around lower town and went to upper town. There was stronger wind than VIA Rail station because upper town was on the hill and it was really tough to shoot Chateau Frontenac photos but I made it and got nice night view of this beautiful chateau.

Then I took some photos of the parliament buildings and back to the hotel. Because of the umbrella my upper body was ok but lower body got soaking. Squeezing jeans pants made drops of waters and shoes and socks also wet to the skins. It was the first time to hear the sound of water in the shoes since elementary school days.

I got to the hotel at 10:30pm and took a shower. Then I tried my best to make it dry jeans and shoes and slept.
I wish these will be dry and will be sunny tomorrow.

朝8時半起き。滞在先がB&B(Bed & Breakfast)ということでホテルで朝食を取る。コーヒーに入れるようにメープル・シロップがおいてある。さすがカナダ。しかもこれがまた上手い。コーヒーの苦さにメープルのトロリとした甘みが絶妙にマッチする。外に出るが、今日もドン曇り・・・。仕方がないので、とりあえず郊外にある滝へと向かう。

ホテルから徒歩3分のところにあるバス停から800番のバスに乗ること35分、終点で降りる。何もない・・・。一瞬不安になるが、滝の音はしている。音のする方へと向かうが、立ち入り禁止のネットが張り巡らされた中、一部に丁度ゲートのような場所があり、そこを進んでいくと、予想外の場所へ！

ガイドブックやネットで見た写真から、滝の下にたどり着くものだと思っていたら、いきなりから滝の上に！！正直、かなりビックリした。

さてこのモンモランシー滝は落差(83m)ではナイアガラの滝をも凌ぐ。滝は2段階に落ちていて、1回目の落下は凄く小さい、そして2回目が80m近い。その1回目と2回目の中間(といっても幅5mもないが・・・)に橋がかかっていて、滝つぼを真上から見下ろせるというなかなかのアトラクション。しかも無料。また滝の両側に展望台があり、西にはロープウェイもある。逆に東はまるで万里の長城を髣髴とさせる階段が途中いくつもの展望台をつなぎながら滝つぼまで続いている。一番下まで降りると、あまりのエネルギーにはじき出された水のしぶきが襲ってくる。
しかもこの滝、冬には完全に凍結し、ロック・クライマーならぬアイス・クライマーが登りにやってくるらしい。

メインの滝の両脇には無数の細い滝もあり、これがそれぞれ大きかったら、ナイアガラ以上の滝として、世界4大瀑布となっていたかもしれないなぁ・・・などと思うと同時に写真ではわかりにくいが所々、黄色い色の水が流れ落ちていたのも印象的だった。
どうしてそこだけ黄色くなるのだろう？そこの部分の土の削れた色だとしたら、それが永遠に続くこともないだろうし、もともとの水の色だとすると、なぜピンポイントでそこだけ黄色くなるのか？誰か答えを教えてくれ！

さらにつり橋を渡った東側には綺麗な紅葉が広がっており、紅・黄・緑のパッチワークに心洗われた。カナダの紅葉最高！！ってわけで、1時間の予定が2時間半も滞在してしまった。

さらに行きのバスで見かけた教会を目指して歩いていると、途中2階まで階段の伸びる民家を多く見かけた。冬になると1階は雪に埋もれてしまうのだろうか？と考えていると、20分ほどで目的の教会へ到着。

鍵が閉まっていたのだが、外で写真を撮っていると神父さんが鍵を開けてくれて中へと招きいれてくれた。外観は昨日見たノートルダム大聖堂と比べても遜色ない豪華な教会だったが、中は正直見劣りがした。

いったんホテルに戻り、仮眠を取り、昨日に続き旧市街へ。夜景撮影が目的だ！がしかし、外に出ると本降り。傘なしではかなり苦しいくらいの雨。それでもバスに乗り、まずは明日の下見も兼ねてVIA鉄道の駅へ。これが駅舎か！？というくらいにメルヘンしている。アメリカの鉄道駅はギリシア神殿風のものが多いが、ここのはギリシア神殿ではなく、中世ヨーロッパのお城風。夜ということでライトアップされていて、その美しさが一層際立つ。

がしかし、川沿いに立っているためか、風が強すぎて、傘が大変なことに！しかし傘を差さないとカメラが濡れてしまう・・・。というわけで傘と体を駆使して、カメラを最優先にしてあくまでも夜景撮影！おかげさまで綺麗な写真が撮れました。

そしてディナー(夕飯とはあえて言わない・・・)は、ケベック料理のお店として有名だとホテルのオーナーに教えてもらったお店へ！地球の歩き方にも載っているお店で、名物だというミート・パイなるものを食べた。美味い！日本語風に夕飯として言い換えるなら肉のパイ生地包みか？とにかく美味い。また付け合せの温野菜もポテトサラダも絶品！値段も$15ちょいと観光客値段でもなく、このお店は久々のヒットだった。

お店がロワー・タウンの一角にあったので、そのままロワー・タウンを歩き、アッパー・タウンへ。シャトー・フロントナックの夜景を撮ろうとするが、ここは高台にあるためか、VIA鉄道よりも風が強い。それでも耐える俺。ってことで、こちらも綺麗な夜景をゲット！

そして州議事堂の夜景も収め、ホテルへ戻る。傘のおかげで上半身は何とかなったが、下半身はずぶ濡れ。ジーンズはヒザ下が絞ると水滴が落ちるほどに濡れ、靴も靴下もぐちょぐちょ。道を歩いていて、久しぶりに歩く度に靴の中で水がクチョって鳴る体験をした。小学生振りか？

ホテルには22時半に戻り、シャワーを浴び、ジーンズや靴が乾くようにあらゆる手を尽くし、就寝。明日の朝、乾いていますように・・・。願わくば明日こそは晴れますように！
