Today is my first time to drive in non-Japanese and non-English country. I got exhausted at the end.

Waking up at 7:30am and checked outside. Oh, it's sunny!! After taking croissant, marble bread(?) and hot coffee for a breakfast, I picked up the car at 9am. I asked them to translate some required English into French such as direction of north, south, west and east and parking template. With these preparation I started driving but it was completely different from I had expected. I couldn't read road sign and emergency message on electric board. In US, turning right on red is legal and Canada is also legal but Quebec province prohibit it as exception. That's too much for me! The most confusing trafic was the flashing green light. What the hell this is!?

Whatever, 2 hours drive to the destination made me tired mentally however beautiful colors of leaves relieved a lot. The one from the train yesterday was wonderful view but today's one was speculor!! All the mountains I could see over front-window showed really beautiful balance of red, yellow and green.
The weather got unstable, cloudy, sunny, cloudy and smoggy. When I arrived at Mont-Tremblant all the sky was covered by cloud. Oh my goodness! I was depressed a bit.

Then I went up to the top of the mountain via free lift and paid lift. Here will be a ski resort in winter and there were a lot of lifts all around. One of them was in operation and brought me to the top. It was still cloudy from the top. However that fact didn't matter. The view from the top was more impact than such a small thing. All the mountains were covered by colored leaves and mountains in far also showed its red color. The one in Miyajima, Hiroshima in Japan was also beautiful but the scale of this place was far better than that. The one in yesterday from the train was flat but this place has difference in height, which brought much wonderful impressions. That's why people call this place as the best place in the world to see colored leaves.

There were not so many as I expected but 30% of people were Japanese, I guess. I decided to take a walk along the trail. B course is 2.5 hours trail and standard time is about 40-60 minutes. I imagined it was flattened road from the word "trail" however it was really tough & hard walk. Besides, due to the rain yesterday it got mud and my shoes also got wet. Also B course didn't have any colored leaves and it was just a hiking through the animal trail after the rain...

One hour later after coming back from the trail, northern sky showed its blue sky. Waiting for a while, blue getting bigger and bigger. Receiving the sunlights, leaves got shines and there were some "Oh!!" sighs here and there.

Since I took a lot of photos and battery got almost run out, I charged my battery at the restaurant nearby. Then I came down the lift. There were other trails at the base and I took course I, which is 1km with 30-45 minutes. This trail showed me various color leaves and the foot was maintained and easy to walk compared with course B on the top. Also there was a small falls, too.

Returning to the central place, blue sky moved toward south and the mountains gained more shine! I moved another side of the lake and took photos. I guess the photo doesn't tell how beautiful it was the lake refleted red, the color of mountains, and it was so fantastic!! Then I went back to town but my mind to think it's waste and interesting feeling of adventure stopped me and I went into a small path.

Here it came!! The biggest thrill hit me. The colored leaves over the surface of the lake were reflected clearly. Also blue sky attached the element. I got full of impressions. I could say there was no regret even if I go back tomorrow... no, that's a lie. But it was too impressive for me to say such lie.

I stopped by at MacDonald on the way to get a coffee. Quebec province charges various tax and it would be about 20% in total. So I imagined it would be so expensive but only coffee was cheaper than US but it was not...

It was already dark when I got back to Montreal and went to Mont-Royal Park observatory, which is popular night spot according to the guide book. However it located another side of one-way road and passed by. Then I found another interesting spot in the book, Saint Joseph's Oratory. Besides it standing on the highest point of Montreal, it has the 2nd largest dome building following St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. I must go to see!

So I let the observatory later and made it to Saint Joseph. It opened until 10pm and I could make it in time. There was a shrine right after the entrance but I couldn't climb up the dome due to the construction. So I climbed up to 6th floor and found another shrine there. This hall was like a huge underground maze in the film of "Lords of the Ring" and it was really surprising for me!!

Then I went to famous dining spot introduced in the guide book. It was famous with smoked meat and I expected it was like a Pinks, famous hot dog store in Los Angeles. But it was not like I expected but it was just a regular meat store with some dining space. The taste of meat was also unexpcted in good meaning. The guide book told they fit into secret sauce for 12 days and smoked it, which was really delicious at the end!!

I returned a car around 11:30pm and dropped the key into a drop box. Then 30 minutes walk to the hotel.

Looking back today, it was really amazing day for me. It was still under half of the whole trip but I can say today is the highlight of this trip.

There was another call from my company and did some stuff and slept after 3am...

今日は人生初の日本語・英語圏以外でのドライブ。正直、めちゃめちゃ疲れた。

7時半起きで、まず空を確認。おぉ、晴れてる！
ホテルのクロワッサンとマーブル・ブレッド(?)とホット・ココアで朝食を済ませ、9時にレンタカーをピックアップ。そこで係りの人に一通り必要な英語をフランス語に翻訳してもらった。東西南北の方向と駐車表示のテンプレートなど。しかし実際に走らせてみるとやはり勝手が大きく違う。道路標識は読めないし、高速に表示される緊急情報を流す電光掲示板も読めない・・・。またアメリカは赤でも右折OKで、カナダもOKだけど、ケベック州のみダメとか、やめてくれ！そして一番困惑したのが青の点滅信号！これって何だ！？

何はともあれ、2時間ほど目的地に向かって走るのだが、精神的に非常に疲れたが、その一方で素晴らしい紅葉に心癒される。昨日電車の中から見えた景色も格別だったが、今日のそれは別格だった。フロントガラス越しに見える山という山が赤・黄・緑の綺麗なバランスを見せてくれる。
途中から曇ったり、晴れたり、曇ったり、霧ったり・・・、でやや不安になる。モン・トランブランに到着すると当たり一面曇っている。マジか!?

少しへこみつつ、無料のリフト、そして有料のリフトと乗り継いで山の頂上へ。ここは冬はスキー場になるため、リフトはあちこちにあるのだが、シーズン以外は動いているのは1つのみ。頂上でリフトを降りてもやはり曇り。しかしそんなことはどうでも良いくらいの絶景が目の前に広がっている。あたり一面の紅葉。遠くに見える山も全体が赤く見える。広島の宮島の紅葉もすごく綺麗だったが、ここのはスケールが違う。また昨日電車の車窓から見えた紅葉も綺麗だったが、基本的に平面上でのそれだったが、ここのは高低差がある分、さらに凄い。さすがに世界一の紅葉とも言われるだけのことはある。
お茶のCMじゃないが、ここの紅葉は見てはダメである。他の紅葉が見れなくなります・・・。

思っていたほど日本人率は高くはなかったが、それでも3割くらいは日本人だっただろうか？とりあえず曇りのままなので、トレイルを歩くことにした。一周2.5kmのBコース、目安は40-60分となっている。トレイルと言われたので、てっきり均された山の中の道を歩くものだと思っていたら、かなりの獣道。しかも前日が雨だったらしく、ぬかるみまくっている。また靴にしみこんでくる〜！さらにこのBコースは紅葉していない森の中を歩くので、ただの前日雨が降った獣道ハイキングだった・・・。

しかし1時間後、トレイルから戻ってくると北のほうから晴れ間が！！しばらく待っているとだんだんと青空が広がってくる。やはり陽が当たると更なる輝きを増す紅葉たち。思わず、おぉ！と声が漏れた。
これでもかというくらいに写真を撮りまくっているとバッテリーが残り少なくなったので、近くのレストラン(というかスキー用のコテージ)で充電させてもらい、リフトで下山。下にもトレイルがあり、今度は1kmのIコース(目安30-45分)を歩いた。こちらは頂上とは違い、紅葉の中を歩くし、足元も頂上に比べたらかなり整備されていて、所々板なんかも置いてあり、歩きやすいことこの上ない。さらに滝もあって、癒された。

再び中心部へ戻ってくると青空が南の方へと移動し、更に山が輝きを増している！場所を移動し、湖の反対側から写真を撮る。写真では伝わらないが、湖が山の色を反射して、赤く染まっていて、感動が増す。そして帰路へ着いたのだが、せっかくのレンタカーなのでというもったいない精神と見知らぬ場所に入ってみたいという冒険心でわき道にそれてみた。

キタ〜！！この旅最大のヒット！水面がたっていない湖の向こうに紅葉が広がっており、湖面に綺麗に紅葉が反射しているではないか！？しかも青空！！いや、もうこの旅満腹です。明日帰っても良いくらいです、はい、嘘です。でもそれくらいに感激の風景でした。

帰り際マックによって、コーヒーを頼む。ケベック州はいくつかの税金が合わさって、20%近くになるので、高いのかと思っていたら、コーヒーだけならアメリカよりも安く拍子抜け。

モントリオールに戻るとすっかり陽は落ちていたので、ガイドブックを見て夜景の定番スポットらしいモン・ロワイヤル公園の展望台に向かった。しかし展望台が一方通行の反対側で通り過ぎてしまった。そこで脇に停車し、地図を確認すると近くに面白そうな場所が・・・。聖ジョセフ礼拝堂という宗教建築物。モントリオールの最高地点に建っているだけでなく、ドーム建築としてはバチカン市国のサン・ピエトロ寺院に次ぐ世界第2位の建物・・・。

これは行かねば！ってことで展望台は後回しにし、礼拝堂へ。22時まで開いているということで、ギリギリ間に合った。入って直ぐ聖堂があった。しかしドームは工事中のため、上れなかった。とはいえ、6階までは登ることが出来、そこにもう1つの聖堂を発見。これが映画「ロード・オブ・ザ・リング」の地下迷宮さながらの造りで圧倒される。

そして夕飯は昨日に引き続き、歩き方に載っていた有名店へ。今日はスモーク・ミートの有名店らしく、いつ行っても行列ができていると紹介してあったので、ロスのホットドッグの有名店Pinksのようなものをイメージしていたら、普通のお肉屋に大衆食堂が併設されている感じで、ちょっと予想外。そして味のほうはかなりの予想外、もちろん良い意味で。歩き方によると秘伝のタレに12日間漬け込んでスモークされたらしいのだが、激ウマ！でした。

レンタカーを23時半頃返却して、キーはドロップ・ボックスに入れ、そこからホテルまで30分歩いて戻った。

しかし、振り返ってみれば、今日は何という素敵な1日だったのだろうか？まだ旅の半分も終わっていないのだが、おそらく今日がこの旅のハイライトだったと確信できる1日でした。

しかしホテルに戻る途中、昨日に続き仕事コール。でいろいろと対応していたら、寝れたのは27時過ぎでした・・・。
