I went to San Francisco for 3 days from 9/21 and New York for 4 days from 10/20 on business trip. This was 8th visit to San Francisco and 5th to New York including sightseeing. Therefore there were no freshness from the point of sightseeing. However I could have first experience in both cities.

In San Francisco, it was when we visited Fort Point right below the Golden Gate Bridge. It happened from four coincidences, mystic natural phenomenon.
First coincidence was timing. It was just before the closing time to arrive at Fort Point. We stopped by after we done our business. If we got there a bit later, we couldn't see that. Second, fog started to appear that time. The fact it just started to appear was the point and if it was covered completely by fog, we couldn't see that. Third was wind. The strong wind through the bridge brought this phenomenon. Then fourth element was sunset. The sunlight lightened up the Gate Bridge in perfect timing.

These four elements were mixed up by chance and made me enjoy this mystic experience. The fog, brought by strong wind, were casted by sunlight and I could enjoy the wonderful view that I had never seen.
Then I took a dinner at the restaurant where I always stop by everytime I visit San Francisco. Whenever I come, whatever I order, this restaurant always serves nice foods.

On the other hand, New York was the one that I would never experience.
It was one week before hurricane Sandy came. There were a lot of constructions of subway and it took me 90 minutes from the airport to the hotel while it usually takes only 30 minutes.

Another first experience was the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Then I visited all the big 3 museum in USA after visiting Chicago and Boston!
There were a lot of works that I saw in textbooks. Among these, one work attracted me a lot, which was "Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies" by Claude Monet. There were other works from the legends such as Picaso, Gogh, Renoir and Gauguin but Monet get my attention somehow.

Also I stopped by Grand Zero. There was nothing when I visited 4 years ago but now there was a high building standing and reminded me of World Trade Center 12 years ago.

I never imagined that I would go another trip in less than a week at this moment...

9月21日から3日間、10月20日から4日間、それぞれサンフランシスコとニューヨークへ出張に行ってきた。観光も含めるとサンフランシスコは8回目、ニューヨークは5回目の訪問。というわけで観光地という意味での新鮮味はないのだが、それでも両都市とも初体験ができた。

まずはサンフランシスコ。ゴールデン・ゲート・ブリッジの下にあるフォート・ポイントという昔の砦を訪れた時のこと。4つの偶然が重なってとても神秘的な自然現象に出会うことができた。
まず1つ目はフォート・ポイントに着いたのが閉館直前だったこと。仕事終わりに何となく立ち寄ったのだが、少し遅ければ出会えなかった。2つ目はその時間帯に霧が出始めたこと。霧が出始めというのがポイントで出きった後では見れない現象。3つ目が風。これでもかってくらいの強風が橋の向こうからこちらへと吹き付けることでこの現象を引き起こした。そして4つ目が夕日がちょうどゲート・ブリッジを照らしたこと。

これら4つの偶然が重なって、8回目の訪問にして初めての神秘的な自然現象を味わうことが出来たのでした。強風によって橋脚を通り抜ける霧が太陽に照らされ、今まで見たこともない素晴らしい風景を楽しませてもらった。
そしてサンフランシスコに来ると必ず立ち寄るピア39のレストランでいつも通りの夕食。いつ来ても、何を頼んでも、このレストランは本当に外れがない。

そしてニューヨーク。こちらの体験は二度と味わいたくない経験。
ハリケーン・サンディが訪れる1週間前だったのだが、地下鉄が工事中だらけで、空港からホテルへ行くのに30分で行けるところが、相次ぐ遠回りで1時間半もかかった。

そしてもう1つの初体験がメトロポリタン美術館。これでシカゴ・ボストンを含めアメリカ三大美術館制覇！
教科書で見た作品がたくさん並んでいたがその中で最も魅かれたのが、モネの「睡蓮の池、日本の橋」。他にもピカソやゴッホ、ルノワール、ゴーギャンなどそうそうたる顔ぶれの作品が並んでいたのだが、なぜかこの作品が妙に気に入ってしまった。

グランド・ゼロにも立ち寄ったが、4年前には何もなかった場所にビルが建っている姿を見て12年前に立ち寄ったワールド・トレード・センターに思いを馳せた。

そしてNYから戻って1週間も経たずに、再び旅に出るとはこの時には思いもしなかった・・・。
