1st game in 2nd day of quarter-final was England who won championship once and Portugal who never won championship.
Portugal supposed to attack from both side by Cristiano Ronaldo and Figo while England supposed to attack with 1-top Rooney and long shoot from middle range or centering from sides. But both teams couldn't create a goal chance in 1st half.

2nd half, Beckham got wounded and went out of the game. Besides, Rooney got red card then England had to fight with 10 players agasint 11 Portuguese players. Taking this chance, Portugal attacked but they couldn't break England defense. On the other hand, England did counter-attack. Lennon who substituted for Beckham was great with his dribble. Both couldn't get a goal and then game continued to overtime. There was no notable chance in overtime. So the game went to penalty shootout following Germany vs Argentina. Portuguese goal keeper shut 3 PKs surpassing yesterday's Lehmann. Then Portugal decided to go to semi-final.

Today's game had been notable in various meanings as the game "England vs Portuguese Coach Scorali".
One was that he rejected the offer to be next England coach. Another one, this is much interesting, Scorali defeated England at same quarter-final in World Cup 2002 as a Brazil coach. He also defeated England in Euro 2004 as a Portuguese coach. So England wanted to win following the saying "Third time is lucky." but it became "Same things that happened twice will happen three times."

準々決勝2日目の第1試合は過去優勝1回のイングランドvs優勝経験なしのポルトガル。
ポルトガルはクリスチャーノ・ロナウドとフィーゴがサイドから切り込み、一方のイングランドは、ルーニーの1トップで中盤からのロング・シュートとサイドからのセンタリングといった形での勝負となるはずだったが、前半はどちらも決定機を作れないまま、終了。

後半に入り、ベッカムが負傷退場し、さらにルーニーが一発レッドとなり、イングランドは10対11の戦いを強いられる。これに乗じて、ポルトガルが攻めるが、イングランドの守備を崩せず、逆にイングランドはカウンターをしかける。中でも冴えていたのがベッカムの替わりに入ったレノンのドリブル。どちらも無得点のまま、試合は延長戦へ。そして延長戦もこれといったチャンスがないまま、昨日のドイツ vs アルゼンチン戦に続き、PK戦へ。
PK戦はポルトガルのGKリカルドが、昨日のレーマンを凌ぐ3本を止め、3-1でポルトガルが勝利し、ベスト8へ名乗りを上げた。

今日の試合は「イングランドvsポルトガルのスコラリ監督」の試合として、いろんな意味で注目されていた。
1つはイングランドの次期代表監督への打診をスコラリ監督が断っていたという点。そしてもう1つ、こちらが面白いのだが、スコラリ監督は2002年大会ではブラジルの監督として、今回と同じベスト8でイングランドを破っている。さらに2004年の欧州選手権でも、ポルトガルを率いて、イングランドを破っており、イングランドとしては、「3度目の正直」として勝利したかったのだろうが、「2度あることは3度ある」になってしまった・・・。
