I went to USC to see two Korean movies "Shiri" and "Brotherhood" because I heard the director, Kang Je-gyu, would have Q&A.

This director made a new box-office record with "Shiri" at that era, and he did it again with "Brotherhood". I say he is Steven Spielberg in Korea!!
There was QA session right after the screening of "Shiri" and we saw another movie "Brotherhood" after we had a reception party. It was 7 hours in total but I felt it was so fast.

There was a question regarding the way of shooting the scene at soccer stadium during QA session. His answer was quite interesting. They couldn't get a permission from soccer association to shoot the film at the stadium, so they pretended as TV crews to shoot it. I felt the huge gap, especially in the passion between Japanese and Korean movie industry.

Then I saw "Brotherhood" for the first time.
It handles North-South Korea as "Shiri" does, and it depicted the Korean War without any hesitation. Japanese can't do the same thing. If we Japanese want to do same thing, we have to make a film focusing on Pearl Harbor. However, it is too sensitive in terms of ethic to do it now.

The next film of this director will be Hollywood movie.
It is suspended because of a strike of WGA(Writers Guild of America). However I'm really interested in it.
I think his name will be in US media as Asian director in Hollywood following Ang Lee and John Woo.
I hope someone from Japan will be the one someday because there is no Spielberg in Japan currently. Last ： Next

先週末、韓国映画「シュリ」、そして「ブラザーフッド」の監督カン・ジェギュがQAを行うと聞き、この2作品を見にUSCに行ってきました。

この監督、「シュリ」で当時の韓国映画の興行収入記録を塗り替え、さらに｢ブラザーフッド」でその記録すら塗り替えたという韓国版スピルバーグのような偉大な監督です。
「シュリ」上映後に監督のQ&Aを行い、レセプション(食事)をはさんで、「ブラザーフッド」の上映。全部で7時間の長丁場でしたが、あっという間でした。

監督とのQAの中でスタジアムのシーン(観客は超満員)をどうやって撮ったのか？との質問にサッカー協会からは撮影を許可されなかったので、TVクルーとしてゲリラ撮影的に撮影したと聞いた時に、日本映画と韓国映画の映画にかける情熱の大きな差を感じました。

そして初めて見た「ブラザーフッド」 。
「シュリ」と同様に南北朝鮮を扱った作品であり、南北朝鮮戦争を真正面から描いた、日本映画には決して真似できない作品。日本が真似をするとしたら、真珠湾攻撃を壮大なスケールで描くしかないが、倫理的な問題もあり、それを実現できる日はまだまだ遠い。

そして、この監督の次回作はハリウッド作品だそうです。
WGA(脚本家組合)のストライキのせいで、滞っているそうですが、個人的にはめちゃくちゃ期待してしまいます。
アン・リーやジョン・ウーに次ぐ、アジア人ハリウッド監督として彼の名前がメディアをにぎわす日も近い！と思います。
願わくば日本人からも、そういう監督が出て欲しいものです。日本では日本版スピルバーグと呼べる監督が一人もいませんから・・・。
